  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

red lumpy sore area on back of Snowy's neck

Hi,Snowy is our male 1yr old neutered mini lop. after being to the vet for neutering he developed red, sore area on back of neck which they gave injection for but weren't sure what it was as their microscope was broken, this was bout 6 months ago. He had wet chin and i panicked and took him to vet couple of weeks ago - where he got antibiotic injection then a further weeks course. they also found he had spurs? on his teeth and sorted this. just found red lumpy sore area again on back of neck, does anyone know what this is and why he gets it? He shares with Isabella who doesn't appear to ever get it.

It sounds like a local skin reaction to the antibiotic injection. This is known as 'Baytril Burn'. I would let your Vet know it has occured so the details can be recorded on Snowy's records and special care can be taken to try to avoid it happening again in the future.
If the area is very sore Snowy would benefit from a few days on an anti-inflammatory eg Metacam. You need to keep a close eye on the effected area to make sure it remains clean and dry and does not become infected.

ARC have many rabbits and guinea pigs neutered, whilst this is not a particuarly common reaction in them it does happen as Jane's says from the Baytril which is given.

Is is usually left well alone to prevent any infection being introduced. As Jane suggests Metacam can be given as an anti inflammatory and pain killer.
