  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hey everyone,

24 hours ago Digby was in his hay & started sneezing. He sneezed five times in a row & then was wiping his nose. He doesn' have any discharge coming out now but since them when he sniffs hard for his food etc. he's making a snorting sound. He's also doing it quitetly when he eats & is eating slower. He's also making small sneezes occassionally. It looks like he's trying to breath through his mouth a bit when eating. Apart from these symtoms he's bright eyed, alert, normal temperature, eating, drinking, pooping.

If anyone could give any advice here that would be great, ie. treatment, possible causes etc. He's off to the vet for a jab & heath check on Wednesday, but if he's no better he'll be there pronto.

Oh he's not breathing through his mouth - gosh, I'd be at the vets them & there!! He's breathing through his nose & that's what's producing the snorting sound - like a child with a snotty nose. He's only taking in a bit of air through his mouth when he eats - like a person with a stuffy nose when they eat.

I have some liquid baytril - might that help in the mean time?

Your Rabbit needs Veterinary attention today
Good luck and please keep us posted

Thank you!
He's seeing the emergency vet at 1pm.

Jane - is there anything I should expect the vet to be doing/prescribing for him? I know in the past I've often wondered if the treatment is correct. I know you're not a vet but a little info. so I can ask the right questions would be ace.

It sounds like he might have got something stuck up his nose if it first began when he was in hay? I hope he's okay and the emergency vets can fix him up! Sending vibes for him x

breathing thru the mouth is a serious problem. I would book to see a rabbit specialist immediately.

I'm pretty sure rabbits are obligate nasal breathers, meaning that they can only breathe through their nose and not through their mouths. This is why it is so dangerous for a rabbit to have discharge, because they could soon not be able to breathe period.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that one.

Rabbits will mouth breathe if they have severe nasal congestion and in cases of severe respiratory distress caused by pneumonia, a heart problem or reduced space within the chest cavity caused by bloat or a tumour.
Mouth breathing is a poor prognostic sign

The only thing I will say is that my Daisy had this three times - she had hay stuck up her nose each time - when it finally worked its way out it was about 3 cm long - no idea how or why it happened. She was the same - continuous or intermittent sneezing and wiping her nose madly - otherwise she was fine.

You need to get checked for everything else though obviously - good luck.

you can ask your vet to flush the nasolacrimal duct on both side, in case there is something say some amount of hay stuck in there.
