Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Milky eye discharge

bunny babe

Wise Old Thumper
Yesterday when Homer was eating some parsley I noticed that his eye started to run a milky substance (not thick). I immediately took him to the vet who put some dye in his eye (nothing came out of his nose). She then flushed them with the fluorescent stuff and this then came out of his nose.

She looked in his mouth and said it was a little pink but only to be expected as he had had dental on Tuesday. There was nothing out of the ordinary with his dental as I rang and spoke to the nurse who was present.

He was given a metacam shot and I have some eye drops to give him and take him back if it gets worse or no better.

My concerns...........the discharge is only when he is eating for a period of time e.g. over 5 mins on the parsley or it started slightly last night when I gave him the cabbage leaf. To me this suggests teeth but is is usually clear or milky? I think it is time we had another Xray.

I will speak to my usual vet when he is back in Tuesday, what questions should I be asking him?

For now I will make sure he only has little bits of food but regular so if it is teeth, there is less pressure until he can see our usual vet. He is fine in himself and eating pooping OK.

Does bun have dental problems and how old?
I can only go off ours... Angel has same problem its worse when shes stressed or eating especially after being flushed for couple of days. We found out last year its down to her back teeth roots pressing against her tear duct which then causes the guk. She has mouth disease (also found out last year) but we to had her flushed to begin with they done intense course (this was after trying eye drops to no effect) she had to have flushed every other day for several weeks. Was great for couple of month then started again so she had more flushing then we were told when we think she needs it flushed to take her. as it gets to point her temper changes and her eye shuts up.
We were also giving eye drops and injections (she wouldnt take med at time) then we found our proper rabbit vet so changed to her she also done flushes then decide to make drain down her throat for guk to run rather than coming out eye. When she done xrays found out about mouth disease etc and she said that their was nothing more vet could do for angel as the teeth were very high up in skull and they were problem also WE MUST NEVER get her eye flushed again as all the flushing has actually shut off her tear duct chanel thing it is now closed completely hence why guk comes out and if we were to flush it again it would burst her tearduct and kill her.
So we just have to persvere with eye drops and dentals. It is poorly at mo but she has dental coming up.
My first advice would be to def check teeth problems obv they have ruled out snuffles etc main course is teeth. (wasnt any dirt in?)
Im not trying to scare you with that cause every bun is different but obv if we hadnt found our original vet it doesnt bare thinking about esp as she gets her eye flushed awake!

what is the discharge? Is it 100% liquid? or it is fluid?

for the daily dirt that normally occur at the corner of his eye when he sleep, is it black color normally? Or it white?

Hi, yes he has elongated roots. We had Xrays done about 18 months ago (when I found this site) and have "managed" his teeth with monthly dentals. My vet is an exotics specialist so it pretty good with bunnies. Homer is 6 this year.

I previously lost a bunny through teeth as the vets I saw just kept saying it was conjunctivitis and lost him about 8 weeks later. I have never been back to these vets. I wish I knew then what I know now but I was new to bunnies and thought they were getting the right treatment.

Homer is a very good bunny and his eye was flushed yesterday conscious.

I just gave him his eye drop earlier (Futh???) and about 20 mins later some white gunk came out - not sure if it was drops but I think they are supposed to go clear once in the eye.

I am praying this is an eye infection but have to face the reality that it may not be.

Happy Hopping - his normal "sleep" discharge is white. The discharge yesterday when I first noticed it was thin white.

It sounds like an infected nasolacrimal duct to me. The duct is obviously not yet fully blocked (by his elongated tooth roots) as the fluorescein came down his nose. But as tooth root elongation is often progressive the duct may eventually become blocked. Another skull Xray would be useful so as the Vet can compare the tooth roots from his previous Xray. Keeping the teeth burred very short may help reduce the rate of root elongation.

xx

Thanks for your replies. I will speak to my vet re burring them lower and getting the X-ray done again. My poor baby :love::love:
