Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Confined to barracks following neuter - How long?

The vet has said that Ollie needs to be confined to his cage for at least 10 days following his neuter (which was last Friday). Is this set in stone? Poor Ollie is going stir crazy.

What sort of length of time did you confine your rabbits following neuter?

both of mine were out playing straight away you just have to make sure they don't dig or anything so they don't get muck/dirt on the wounds

I only restrict my Bucks for 48 HOURS.
Does for 7 days.

The stress of confining a Buck for 10 days will be counterproductive and IMO is completely unnnecessary

Hmmm, an interesting mix of views. I have to say, he is very happy, very lively, eating and pooing really well. Just very, very bored.

I have the utmost respect for Jacks-Jane and so Ollie will be going out for a play very shortly. Can't wait to see the binkies!

My boy was only in his cage for 48 HOURS and the first night i brought his cage indoors.

10 days seems a really long time, poor thing will go crazy.

I could only confine Ghostie for a night as she was going bonkers in the dog crate (doe)! Just make sure that the wound stays clean

10 days seems a long time for a little boy. I was advised a couple of days of rest then no jumping or stairs or ramps until after 10 day check up but a supervised bit of leg stretching was o.k. We just kept him in the kitchen for a run around.

It was a while ago since I had mine neutered but I didnt confine them for that long. One was a house rabbit at the time but the other two were outdoors and I think once they seemed alright in themselves, I let them out again. It was about 48hours max

I kept Fluffy in for no longer than 48 hrs,a spay is different as they have to open the abdominal cavity,so more important to restrict freedom. :)

I agree, I only cage rest boys for 48 hours. I think it is more important that they aren't humping things for a week or so after as this can cause fluid to collect in the sacks and which can create problems with swelling

I only rested my little guy for 48 hours as well, and he turned out fine. He actually had stasis following the surgery, and him running around put him in better spirits and helped his gut to move along quicker. I think 7-10 is definitely too long, but DO keep an eye on his stitches. Check them at least twice a day and keep a look out for any blood.
