Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Flexicam/Metacam dose

bunny babe

Wise Old Thumper
Hi, Homer had his dental yesterday and today is moving his mouth round a bit so I have given him 1 drop of Flexicam (dog). Is this amount OK? He weighs 4.2kg.

I believe flexicam is the generic version of Metacam.

The syringe only shows weight of dogs so is not in mls.

My vet prescribes meloxicam at a dose rate of 0.3mg/kg/12 hours
I dont know how many mg there are in 'one drop' as I measure it out in ml.

0.1ml = 0.15mg meloxicam for the DOG preperation

My vet gave me some metacam for my French lop for her back and advised giving her a 1/2 strength dose of 2kg on the syringe each morning as she weighs 4 kg.

if a rabbit weighs 4.2KG , using the dog dosage:

the normal amount dosage is:

dosage (in ml) = wt. in KG x 0.1 / 1.5 PER 24 hr.

so 4.2 x 0.1 /1.5 = 0.28 ml per 24 hr.

Thanks Jane, so.......

0.3mg x 4.2kg (bunny) = 12mg
12mg = just less than 0.1ml

I just found a 5ml syringe, squeezed out one drop (same size) and drew it into the syringe, it never even came up to the bottom line in the 1ml (which is is 0.2 markings), in fact it only came to just over the top of the nozzle bit.

I am such a worrier as I am not used to it.

5 ml syringe is the wrong syringe

You need a 1 ml syringe and measure 0.?? from that syringe.
because 1 ml is divide into 10 division 0.1 ml each.

I recommend 0.28 ml

Found a 1ml syringe and put 0.1ml in and pushed it out and it was approx same amount as I gave him in the "drop". Will not use "drops" again.

As the bottle was a "repeat" from a nurse it only said on it use as directed.
