Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Gastric Ulcers?

Wise Old Thumper
Hi

Some of you may have read a few days ago when I posted asking whther people thought I could give some more metacam to Mulberry while he was in pain and had stassis and i mentioned that we were having x-rays and bloods etc done.

Well we had the x-rays and exams done today (bloods sent away and not back for a week as gone to specialist for full run) and there are no teeth or kidney or other visible problems which might be causing the stassis, no arthritis, no nothing - in fact he is in great shape!!. Except he's had stassis 3 times in one month).

My vet suggested that, as he is a VERY nervy rabbit it may be stress causing gastric ulcers.(He is one of those large, gentle but nervous buns , huge ears and frightened of everything).

Typically the stassis flares up very quickly and then after liquids etc it dies down quickly (except last time). The first time is a bit of a mystery - but the second time it happened we had just got another new rabbit (male) who I suspect he could smell - and who he had a little 'spat' with through the run wires, , and this last time was 36 hours or so after we had been to the vets with them all for their jabs. So he was again very stressed.

In fact she thinks he may flare up again after today as even with mild sedation whilst he was waiting for the gas for x-rays she says he was shaking like a leaf all the time - despite being put in a seperate room on his own.

She has given some Tage . . (sorry - bottle not in same room as computer) to try if it does flare up again. Basically it soothes the ulcers.

My question is Does anyone else have a rabbit with ulcers??? And how have they coped with it? And do these symptoms sound right? And given that he has a secure large hutch which is closed at night, a loving partner, a totally secure huge aviary run, tons and tons of hay, and a fox and cat free garden with electric fencing . . . . what else can we do to make him less nervy?????

. . . actually thats quite a lot of questions!

Help appreciated
