  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Feeding before surgery

GBNI

Adrian is going in for his surgery tomorrow, and I'm worrying already! The vet said to continue feeding him until he goes in. He gets ad lib hay and a handful of pellets in the morning and one again in the evening. But then someone else said after his evening feed tonight only allow hay and no pellets tomorrow morning as they are heavier on the tummy? My head is like

What is best? And what about his water? Should he just be allowed it as normal? I have a little carrier all ready, it has a nice soft dog towel in it (brand new ones I happened to find for £1 in Tesco!) should I send any food/hay/treats and his water bottle with him?

College have lent me an indoor cage so he can live in the sunroom. It will have more of the towels and then puppy training pads in case he can't get into his little tray (which I've put Carefresh in instead of sawdust as it would be softer on his wound?)

Thanks, from a v.worried Gina!

Feed and water him as normal.
You can take some of his fave veg in with him to tempt him to eat after his op.
The Vet surgery should provide a sipper bottle and hay.
