  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

URGENT: Metacam twice in one day?

parsnipbun

Wise Old Thumper
Mulbery has stassis. This is 3rd time in a month and we cannot find out why. He is due to have x-rays and bloods and in depth teeth exam next Weds. Last two times he bounced back really quick. This time he appears in a lot more pain. He is on metacam and metclopromide - and then yesterday afternoon he had some bupronorphine.
His last metacam was this morning at 8.00am - problem is I can see his bupronorphine has now worn off (he had it 24 hour ago) and the pain is back - can I give a second metacam dose when the last one was only 12 hours ago?? We have syringe fed him so he does have something in stomach but not lot. Or should I take him to the emergency vet for another bupronorphine?

Anyone????

I think you should call an emergency vet to ask him ? it would be safer to explain what the problem is so he can tell you what to do

My Vet prescribes Metacam every 12 hours- 0.3mg/kg every 12 hours.
BUT I would suggest you consult your Vet as it is only he/she who can advise you.

Good luck

Agree and suggest you have a chat with your vet as I have only been prescribed it once every 24hours and it shouldn't be overdosed from your vets prescription.

Re Jacks Jane 0.3mg - thats interesting - we used only 0.1mg per kg. I know that recently the dosages recommended have been given much more leeway so maybe I should have given higher dose. It is actually the Dogs one I am on (used to have the cats one). Not sure if thats different?

Unfortunately our vet is now closed (since 12.00 midday) and the emergency vet is a different vet and NOT particularly rabbit savvy. Cambridge is rather odd now as almost all the vets rely on one specialist 24hr vets to provide cover for them. The 24 hr vet will not give advice over the phone - you have to take the rabbit in and I don't really want to add to his stress if I can avoid it. The emergency vet is a very stressful place and a bit of a drive away.

He has just had something to nibble on voluntarily so I will hang on and see if we can make it through till I feel I can resonably give him more metacam but am re-assured that more frequent usage appears possible.

huge thank you for the knowledgable and thoughtful replies As ever. ..

PS we are thinking either teeth or kidney/uretha stones for the cause now it has happened three times - but am waiting for full tests and x-rays etc to be carried out on Weds. The attacks are linked with pain and come on very suddenly.

I agree with this (all parts of the above message). I used to give it every 12 hours as I found it worked better that way, and my vet agreed.

Cross posted - yes, it was the dog one where I was given the same dosage as Jane.

we use the dog dosage too.

the normal dosage is:

dosage (in ml) = wt. in KG x 0.1 / 1.5 PER 24 hr.

in your case you can use the high dosage for a few days:

dosage (in ml) = wt. in KG x 0.2 / 1.5 PER 24 hr.

it's quite safe, as I have given the high dosage in "occasional cramping" days on my bridge bun Goofball when she had bone cancer.

So if you were using the 1st formula, then you can use the same dosage in the 2nd half of the 24 hr. period just to get by in the next few days.

Is your bun's diet compose of 90% hay? And have you taken a x-ray around the upper and lower jaw?

my rabbit vet is one of the best and he put my two on 0.8ml metacam twice a day, that was then reduced down to 0.4ml twice a day, and he said this is a small dose for a rabbit.

i told him all the comments people gave to me about it being too much and he said it's wrong, and that doses that he gives are perfectly fine, and he has been doing this for years.

he is a top rabbit specialist and has been for about 25 years and i would trust him as he has fully trained in rabbits and continues to do so very regularly. :)
