  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit spayed, now limping - normal?

Young Bun
Hi, I had my bun Dolly speyed yesterday, she is fine today, eating and drinking lots other than her back right leg which she is limping on badly. She is only in a small recovery cage but definately has a limp. Could this be something to do with her wound? Also, she has not been shaved so it is quite difficult to see where the wound is without disturbing her too much!!

Has anyone else had this with their bun after being speyed? She is going back to the vet tomorrow for her post-op check so will ask then but am a bit worried about accusing them of doing something to her leg :?

They may have given some of her injections into the muscles of her leg which has left them sore, or it could just be because she's sore from the op wound.

Ditto to that but do contact your Vet to ask if injections where given IM.
Care needs to be taken if given into the thigh muscle to avoid going into the ischiatic nerve. If this happens pain and lameness occurs.
Your Bun may benefit from a few days on an anti-inflammatory med such as metacam as pain can effect GI function in Rabbits.

Ouch! Hopefully not if they are experienced and use a good technique.

Thanks for replies! It seems slightly better this afternoon although her eyes are now really running. Bit worried about her. Doesn't look quite as good as she did yesterday. The vet seemed quite good, they do all of the Greenwich rescue buns so do quite a few!

On the other hand they told me Dollys husbun Sooty was the worst she had seen in terms of resisting his VHd jab! Took 15 mind and 3 of us to hold him down. He was having a bad day though as he missed his wife!! He's not usually like that!!

Maybe the Vets did not use any eye ointment to protect your Bun's corneas during anaesthesia :? If her eyes continue to be 'watery' she should be checked by a Vet as corneal ulcers can occur if adequate protection (ointment or taping down of eyelids) is not used during a GA.

Hmm, that is bad if they didn't. I will ask and suggest they use it in the future. Would it cause permanent damage?
Many thanks for help

If a corneal ulcer occurs then prompt treatment is needed. This may not be the cause of your Bun's 'watery eyes' but it is something to bare in mind and I would certainly contact the Vet if the problem has not resolved by tomorrow.
