  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

soft stool problem is contagious?

I have a male rabbit, age 2. he produces too many cecotropes, that are usually more runny than they should be. His female partner died recently from diarrhea, but before this she had the long term problem that he has now (death probably not related to the soft stools, unsure). i changed the diet in many ways, no fruit or veg, lots of hay, few pellets etc. I have had rabbits before and never had these problems, so i think there is an underlying problem. I think that the male might have caught something from the other one. have you heard of anything like this? there is not much information on the internet. could worms do this? i havent seen any though. do antibiotics kill the good bacteria in the cecum? The female was on antibiotics for a time but I didnt notice any difference, not sure.

Any help would be great. I want to fix him up with a new lady but he must be better first.

yes Laura, all possibilities you mention are not to be left aside, pse go to the vet.. Pro-biotics should be given with antibiotics.. I had a rabbit once who produced only liquid caeco because her caecum was lacking the correct bacterial flaura.. so the vet had to correct the balance by supplying ferments.. but before, I think a culture of the stools should be done, to see if they are no toxic germs in it, so ask your vet about it...

thank you
i will have to find a good vet. i trust the vet i go to but i dont think he would do all the things you mention.

or try a savvy vet specialised in rabbits in your area... some members may give your some addresses
