Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore red patches on Piccolo's skin - help please

Piccolo has 2 sore red patches on his skin (he's lost the fur there too). When i went to the vet they said he had a skin infection and prescribed baytril and an antibacterial wash twice a day. they didn't know what had caused it. one patch looks to have a wound in the middle, but I have no idea whether this is the cause of the problem or caused by scratching afterwards.

It doesn't appear to be clearing up. He's not scratching and doesn't appear to be uncomfortable.

None of my other rabbits are affected. Any idea what could be causing this? And how can we treat it?

I don't think it is parasitic because his partner is not affected.

Could be the result of a scrap maybe? They quite often chase each other when frightened so maybe she's bitten him?

The only thing I would really suggest would be to clean with hibiscrub (although thats probably what your vet gave you!) Could it be a small bite thats got a little infected so he's been scratching it perhaps? Although if its not clearing up maybe your vet should take a skin scrape just to be certain.

The vet said last week they might have to do a skin scrape so we'll see tonight. I'm hoping it's my usual vet tonight because it was a newer vet last week. She's very good but doesn't have as much experience as my usual one.

Maybe he'll know what's wrong.

I've heard that baytril doesn't work very well with skin infections, is there anything else that's better?

Also, although the vet says the skin is infected, there's no pus.

Can you post a pic of it ?

Not until Monday I'm afraid, i only have internet access at work.

It's red and flaky and looks very sore, the larger patch has a scab in the middle which is a straight line about 1cm long. the smaller patch showed some sign of healing before we started treatment in that it looked to have flaky new skin growing on top of the sore bit.

The patches aren't grazes, but look very similar to light grazes or friction burns on a person. It looks like the skin has more or less gone from these patches because the red bits are shiny like when you graxe yourself and see exposed flesh.
