I cant bear this :(

Wise Old Thumper
Got home from uni yesterday, so happy to see the buns.

what happens today?

Scooped him up to take him outside for a run and checked his foot, as i didnt check it yesterday when i arrived home. It had burst open and there is puss all over his foot. I have cleaned it, and he has a vet appointment at 5:30.

I dont know what to think. This happened in January so its only been two months. and we have done everything physically possible to prevent it coming back.

He cant go under GA and have it removed every 2 months.

I am so distraught, this is not what i wanted to come home to. Mum has been checking on it every other day and she said it looked okay, it was obviously building up and luckily im at home now its burst. My mum has been looking after them very very well, she cleans their litter morning and night so its always dry,and always tops up the hay so its soft.

my poor peanut. i dont know what to think or do now.

Sorry to hear he has a poorly foot again :(
Don't have any advice but just wanted to send him some vibes for the vets x

Oh no I am sorry to hear this

Rabbit abscesses are really :censored:

Lots of vibes for your brave boy

i just dont know what there going to suggest, i doubt they will recommend doing it again when it was on the 14th january last time.

its such a bad place too, the hock.
hes currently scoffing a weird plate of basil, mint, dried papaya and an alfalfa slim.

what a dinner! i felt sorry for him

I would think it is possible to operate again :?
That would probably give the best chance of stopping the progression of the infection :? The Vet could also send of a swab from the abscess wall to see what bacteria are involved and identify the most appropriate antibiotic to use.
Abscessated hocks are nasty

is it risky for him to go under a GA again? is there a bigger risk or not bcus it was in january?

i know a GA has it risks but, is it a bigger risk now:?

I dont think the risk will be any greater. Its over 3 months since his last one. I have had Dental Rabbits go under GA every 6 weeks. I think a greater 'risk' would be to not go straight in with aggressive treatment for the abscess.
Certainly if it were one of my Buns I would agree to another op' if my Vet suggested it. And if she didn't suggest it I'd ask her why.

Sending massive vibes for peanut.Sarah, Willow had an abscess removed from his bowel last Wednesday and he has had another GA today because he has pulled his stitches out for the third time.I have just got him home and hes sat in his hey eating dandilions. So please dont worry to much about peanut having a GA

im not if theres no more risk than before, he always comes round well from them so i think he would be okay in that sense.

its just, the reason he got it,was because the ligaments in his leg slip and drag his foot every now n then, n thats whats caused it.

so there gunna have to have a new suggestion to get rid of it :?

Are both hind legs effected ?

both are affected with the slipping tendons but the one with the abcess is affected more.

Ah right, I guess it is a case of managing a chronic condition then.
I still feel that treating the abscessated hock surgically would be the best option, but of course I am not a Vet.

What antibiotics has he had in the past and was the abscess packed after the last op ?

what they were i cant remember, but yeh the abcess was packed. I'll have to see what they say, i hope he will be okay :)

Update

She felt the hock and said it was worse than before. there was lots of puss and he flinched everytime we touched it.

He is bandaged up like he was when he had it removed, with creme too. He has had apain relief, anti inflmatory and an antibiotic injection. And been given some creme.

If it is still bad on wednesday, she will refer him to see the specialist he almost saw last time. She said she doesnt think for a moment this creme is going to work but she wanted to give it a chance and i said he was insured so cost wise she can try anything she wants!lol

but she said if its not healed by wednesday he will see the specialist later that week, but she said she is so stumped on what to do.

She moved his leg back and forth and it clicked everytime, and sort of 'dropped' it was weird.

he has also lost 100grams of weight but she isnt too concerned about that at this stage, but we are keeping an eye on it.

aww no  sending lots of vibes for peanut hun and a hug to you of course :(

just to let you know Crystal has dentals under GA every 6-12 weeks and she recovers fine from them it hasnt effected her at all but obviously every bun would be diff.
