  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hope you dont mind me asking out of curiosity but do Guinea pigs need any vaccs? If so what and can they get VHD?? Ta very muchly.xx

No vaccs no but mites is the only jab they could need if they have hay/bedding that hasn't been stored correctly. You will know this by bald patches and scratching a lot!

They need specially formulated guinea pig food as it replaces the vit c as their bodies cannot produce it. Sometimes they can overdose on Vit C which can show up during eye examinations (my vet is an eye specialist!) so just the food, water and some veg cabbage/broccoli etc no special supplements are needed. And lovely hay of course. Rabbit food is toxic to piggies due to the prebiotics and things they add.

Their teeth grown continuously the same as buns so need wood chews and hay to keep them worn. Their teeth can fuse to form a bridge over their tongues so look out for the same symptoms of teeth probs as with bunnies.

Pellets are best to feed as again with bunnies - piggies can be selective feeders and will pick the goodies out of a mix leaving the bits that are good for their teeth!

Claws need clipping too, and they can get flystrike so keep botties clean.
Males can suffer impacted anus so make sure checks are done daily. Oh and they eat poops like bunnies!

They have a wax gland... at the base of their spine there is a small slit/opening - not underneath by the bottom etc. This feels greasy to touch. Keep an eye on this as they excrete wax from this and it can become blocked.. use swarfega with the grainy bits to gently rub over and break the wax up and clean the duct. Bath with some guinea shampoo afterwards. (always keep in the house in a box/basket of warm towels if bathed until fully dry) They handle heat quite well but we use cage fans and ice bottles anyway. Cold is more of an issue and they should be put in a shed or given heat pads etc when it's icey etc. Bonfire night is the same routine for piggies as it is for most buns.. bring them into the house.

Talk about a crash course on piggies! Sorry :lol::lol:

I agree here about not giving supplements, veggies, vit C produced in food should be fine. Mine love carrots, spinach, apple, pear, all that jazz :) Feed veg twice a day morning and night.

Sorry of you already knew all of this, no offence intended and I hope I haven't insulted your intelligence (sorry?!) Once I started typing I couldn't stop :oops:

finely chopped up celery and slices of cucumber are always a hit too :D
I read somewhere that carrots can cause liver probs - although ours have carrot and are ok (touch wood:))

Lavendar is a good plant to grow - the smell drives our crazy and they snuggle into the plant squeeking like mad.. and come out smelling divine!

Had a couple of girlfriends round for dinner (they are beebee Bunnies Godmothers) and we were talking about vaccs for bunnies. They knew nowt about VHD vaccs that Beebee and Mrs Bun have but did say they have a GP where they work with a bleeding nose. They will get the vet to see her nonetheless.
Anyway,grateful thanks to all who posted.Take care.xx
