Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Dobbin to emergency vets

Dobbin

Mama Doe
Just taken Dobbin to emergency vets, we went out at 6am to give them there breakfast and Dobbin wouldnt come out the litter tray and would not eat. Just got back from emergency vets, vet says his tummy and bowel isnt making any funny noises and he not sure whats wrong. He has given Dobbin two injections and sent him home again with me. Dobbin and Twinkle are now hiding up in the hutch looking very sorry for themselves. Vet gave me some critical care to feed Dobbin every two hours but he did not give me any instructions for it. How do i make it up pls?

Thanks for help and advice.

Vibes for Dobbin, I hope he is feeling better soon.

Did the vet give gut stuimultant and pain killer? Did they check that there was no blockage?

There are normally instructions on the packet. I have only used Science Recovery before and it is made as quite a "watery" solution so that it can be syringed.

Make sure you keep Dobbin nice and warm. You could also try some tunmmy rubs and get him moving around as this can sometimes help. Also try to get extra fluids into Dobbin by giving him water in a bowl maybe with a dash of boiling to make it room temperature or a dash of fresh pineapple juice to tempt him.

I also try to tempt with a variety of herbs, kale, spinach, spring greens etc to get them to eat themselves. Sometimes the stronger smelling ones tempt e.g. thyme.

Good luck.

you have to keep them inside as they are sick. They can't fight the cold and fight the sickness at the same time.

Your vet is not a rabbit savvy specialist, you should see a rabbit savvy specialist instead.

You need to check if there is bloat on the stomach, is there stomach hard or soft? If it's hard, that's very dangerous, they might only have 12 hr. left. You need to get them to rabbit savvy vet, and the vet will know how to get a tube inside the mouth of the bun, and suck the gas and stuff out.

If their stomach is soft, read this link:

critical care is good, but it smells bad, I don't use it anymore. As rabbits don't like the taste or smell.

DO NOT FEED YOUR RABBIT WITH ANYTHING (FOOD NOR WATER) IF THEIR STOMACH IS SUFFERING FROM BLOAT

I came up w/ this idea that I have use to 1 of my bridge bun for over 1 yr:

1) Get some non-meat baby food, use a syringe to suck up the baby food, get a cup of hot water, dump the syringe in the hot water for 2 min., now the syringe is warm, so you now syringe feed the baby food to your bun.

Every 1Kg of bunny weight, get 100 ml of food inside him per 24 hr.

OR

2) Get some blackberry or raspberry, smash it via juicer. You need about 6 oz. Get some hay stem, cut the stem in 1 mm length, mixed it w/ the blackberry. Put the mixture in a 35 ml syringe and force feed your bun. Your bun need the fiber to survive.

You need to force feed your bun via syringe. If a bun doesn't eat, he will die, except if his stomach is suffering from bloat, then you need your vet to use the tube idea to suck the gas out first
