:? i know buns can hide their pain but this is crazy:shock:

Berties eye ulcer is not healing..its not getting any worse but then again its not getting any better either:( The odd thing the only thig which led me to take him to the vet was he was ultra grumpy and not happy at all....but eating fine etc. after ruling out everything else the vet checked his eyes and one had a tny maybe scratch or something...when stianed turned out to be a corneal ulcer.

he has NOT had a mucky eye or even a mildy watery eye:shock::shock:

Then theres our poor little rescued bun casper....who has lost his lower lip due to an injury or something and it had gone necrotic. Yesterday the vet discovered that it was NOT food debris and panacur in his teeth at the bottom but a tooth root abscess:shock:
This little bun is eating like a horse but has problems with hay but still tries.
He is so happy and binkies almost non stop...is becoming more used to people now and is letting us touch him..but hes still wild with everyone else inc the vet who he bit:oops:
hes showing no obvious signs of being affected by anything let laone this horrific condition:shock::shock:

what on earth is going on..is it purely because theyre hiding their pain too well? but i know berties pain signals only too well and its why i took him to the vets...but his eye..omg:shock:

poor little casper i havent had long enough to read his body signals yet but to be ating so well and lively..i just dont get it:(

no wonder i lost bandit to acute bloat........am i thick or something or are my buns just good at hiding pain? and casper has had the white stuff accumalte every few days since we got him home form the vets that first day:shock:

my old kidney cat defied description tho too...she was a firm plump old puddy cat with a beautiful soft shiny coat:shock:

awwww i dont know yet as im new to having to look after my pet rabbits. (mum did ours when we was kids) xxx Hope they are ok xxx

buns are a bit of a mystery...my Sorrel has an abcess and bad molar spurs but never shows symptoms at all, i only found out about her problems by accident.:?

hope your buns improve soon and don't give you too much stress in the meantime x

What treatment is Bertie on for his eye?
If it's not healing after a few days the vet might need to prescribe him some different drops.
Yes they hide pain well. When my bun had an eye ulcer the only change in his behaviour was that he was grooming his girls less- they were grooming him instead which is unusual but often happens when a bun is not well.

My bun had an ulcer and at the start I think he was in pain. I think this because every time, I did the antibotics and drop he wouldn't stop licking me. I think he was saying thanks for helping (that is what I like to think!). Anyway, towards the end of the treatment, he still had the ulcer but I dont think it bothered him as much (he stopped licking me!) and now after weeks of drops and antibotics the ulcer has gone.

I think bun's are quite hard to read/understand.

phew..so im not alone..thank you!!

As for Berties eye ulcers..now backt o one again..yes he developed a second one a week after having his first lot of drops:shock:

hes had chloraphenical i think its is drops..no oh holdon it wasnt it was FUCTHALMIC EYE stuff.

then he went onto tiacil.
After that the vet put numbing drops in his eye and scratched the surface of the ulcer as it can thenheal quicker..and gave him more tiacil drops wholeheartedly expecting it to be cured.

But it didnt work and it didnt help that i then had a weeks break form the vets because of bif having gi probs and being hopsitlaised overnite..he had to have his appointment changed and went four days later and with no eye drops till he could have his check up as theyd run out.

This time she was stunend..his ulcer is not nay worse but it is not nay better at all..its stuck in a rut literally.

Elen was trying to explain a method shed heard of using blood from the bunny to make a serum to help heal the ulcer with its own antibodies or soemthing..i dont know i got evry confused and upset..first bertie then poor little capser..it was a lot to take in that day.

she is going to have a word with some collegues and also ring the exotics specialist john chitty in andover for advice.

fingers crossed when she rings me tomorrow she may have a way forward for bertie..i cant give him metacam constantly so hes without pain relief....i dont know if theres any drops can be used full time..my mum had cataract surgery done and had some but they didnt exactly help at all.

as soona si know different i will post update..eye ulcers are very tricky things if they dont repsond but so are abscesses.

bertie had an abscess under his chin..at the time petra was my vet and all she did was to squeeze the pus out and clean it out and flush it and give him baytril..then he went for regular check ups with rob and staye don baytril for about tow maybe three weks and it healed:shock: i must have been so lucky there..but rob did warnme they like to return.often...so far so good with that staying away but poor bertie.
i reckon it was form his many fights with bif when i was rebonding him bif n bandit before bandit died. bif savagkey attacked bertie one night and bit rhu his eye lid and it couldnt be sutured so im guessing she affected his eye too but its been unoticeable until now when his mood was always grumpy instead of my big fluffy pyjama case that he is:lol: he does love his cuddles esp when youre ready for bed in pjs..he relaxes cos your relaxing:lol:

such a worry but you wouldnt be without them:love:

It sounds like a referral to an eye specialist may be the next step. This is not meant as a criticism of your vet in any way, she sounds excellent, but specialist knowledge may be necessary at this stage.

hmm i thoguht so too but the more advanced vet whos had soo many buns to treat has found shes had more sucess at htis stage to leave the hey for a week or so and then re assess as sometimes the drops themselves might be causing it not to heal by then.
if its not healed then a veterinary opthamologist i guess ir the analagous serum idea my vet had but cant find anyone whos had experience with it..and john chitty is away on holiday..
