  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

VHD Vaccination.. couple of questions

Sorry these are probably really silly questions but I just want confirmation of what I think I know

Is it ok to have this done slightly early? I'm only thinking about a week before the year is up.

Also is it ok to have it done a week or so before bonding?

It's fine to have it early.
I would wait a couple of weeks if poss, just because both things cause stress to the bun, and too much stress at the same time can cause health problems :)

If your Vet uses the CYLAP VHD Vaccine I'd wait at least 3 weeks before bonding as a full immune response is not achieved until 21 days after vaccinating

If the Vet uses LAPINJECT then an immune response occurs after 6 days so you could bond after that

So would the imune response be an issue because of the stress with bonding? The bonding would be between rabbits that are already living in the same area just not the same group.

Yes, stress can effect the immune system/immune response. Personally I would do as I suggested above if at all possible :)
Some people may think I am being over cautious though.
