  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Poor eyesight!

Hi
Is there any way you can tell if a rabbit has poor eyesight?
Not sure if Honey struggles sometimes with seeing things?

Thank You

I'm just learning a bit about this myself, but I figured I could maybe point you in a direction!

My new rabbit does something called "scanning". Apparently, this is a sign of bad eyesight. My rabbit just looks like she's drifting her head back and forth. Initially, I was concerned that it was the start of head tilt or that she had some loss of motor control, but it turned out just to be this scanning. She only does it when she's sitting still or laying down. They compared this behavior with bringing a newspaper closer then farther away to bring it into focus. She is similarly turning her head till she brings things in focus.

Other than that, I have no idea. This is a really interesting read though if you have time: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/vision.html

I'll be interested to read this thread and see what everyone else has to say!

Hi
Yes I have heard of the scanning thing, but she doesn't do that!

I have to put things right up in front of her almost, before she sees it.
although she can race around at a speedy pace, in and out of chairs etc.

Maybe she is just ignoring me!!:lol::lol:

I might just be imagining it and will keep monitoring. Only really noticed this weekend
