  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

2 of my bunnies have an almost completely bald back of the neck? it is not red or sore looking and they are not itching? one of the them is one of my babies and the others are all fine and the other one is 5 months old and doesnt live near them??? any ideas???

Do either of them have any 'dandruffy' type flakes? When I have seen bunnies with excessive balding bits at the back of their necks, they have usually had mites (which often shows up as bits of 'dandruff').

Thinning fur can also be an indication of general health not being great, so if it's not just a simple thin fur/moult, a vet check might not be a bad idea :)

Edit: Oooh Lou's post has given me another thought - do the ones with 'bald' bits live with other bunnies? When bunnies hump other buns out of dominance, they can sometimes pull at the fur on the back/at the base of the neck. Might this be a possibility? If so - it sounds like it's time for neutering if they aren't already and watch out as it could develop into fights.

Agree with Alison that this doesnt sound like it is normal. Can you post a picture and perhaps who lives with whom to help us.

Has the ones with bald patches been recently vaccinated, operated on, injected with anything?

That's what I was thinking, I collected a couple of males who had been living together, one had a bald neck where the other had been humping it
