  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

holding buns to check teeth

I know i should know this already, being a vet student, but we havent been taught this yet!

I was trying to check my girls' inscisors tonight - managed to do Indi's by turning her upside down and squishing her in the crook of my arm, but Phoenix was having none of it  (odd as she's usually the friendlier one that enjoys being handled!). I tried it by putting her on the wheelie bin lid (only high non-slip surface we have) facing away from me, then bending right over her to look, like looking back at myself (if that makes sense?!) but when i tried to lift her lips she twitched away and i couldnt get a look

how do you hold yours? they dont like wrapping, makes them worse rather than better!
thanks

a bit like you do indies I think although I tend to support their bottom in the crook of my arm and have one hand supporting the head with a finger helping to hold down a lip & the other hand free to help pull the upper lip up. It's not the way I'd normally hold a bun but it does work sort of...it's one of those things that is very hard to describe without showing.

No advice sorry :(

I'm lucky where Tila just sits on his hutch roof and lets me pull his lips back with no need for restraining him at all. It took him a bit to get used to, but keep trying :) He has this done twice a day however, he's on permanent meds so is used to it by now.

I lay Julie in my lap on her back and put her in a bunny trace so I can see all her teeth. That is the best way to get a good look but she doesn't mind me messing in her mouth at all as she is not a biter.
