Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Head Tilt

Alpha Buck
Can anyone please advise me if there is anything else I can do for my rabbit. I have posted today about a flemish giant that was found in a box (think it is in the wrong place though). The rabbit was found on Monday morning in a very distressed state. She had ear infection so took her straight to the vets. Started treatment for ears. Her stomache was empty but we have managed to get some food and water down her by syringe. She then showed signs of head tilt and her eyes were rolling so back to the vets. She is on Baytril, Metacam, Panacur and Canaural. Today her eyes have stopped rolling and she is even trying to eat for herself. Is she showing signs of recovery...... If anyone can advise that would be great. Thank you

She is on the correct treatment to cover her for both infection and EC.
The headtilt may take a long time to resolve, weeks rather than days. Sometimes the Bun can be left with a permanent tilt but they can adapt well and cope. The tilt is caused by inflammation as a result of infection and/or EC.

I assume the Vet was confident that Jessie's eardrums were intact. Should they be perforated then Canaural should not be used. Did the tilt/rolling eyes start AFTER using Canaural ?

Keeping Jessie's GI tract going whilst she is poorly will be important. Its good news that she is now eating a little for herself :)

Although their use in rabbits is very controversial sometimes a steroid injection when a head tilt first manifests helps to bring down the inflammation. It has to be weighed up again the steroids negative effect on the immune system.

Thank you Jacks-Jane. The vet gave her a thorough examination on Monday when we picked her up. Her ears were really quite bad. I think the vets were looking for signs of head tilt then and again on Wednesday. She did show signs by Thursday and then her eyes started rolling. So back to vets. She is going back in the morning.

Thanks Lilbun. I really dont think she is healthy enough for steroid injection. But will ask the vet in the morning.

The only other thing I can think of that may help is supportive treatment e.g. iv fluids to help keep her functioning while the medications start to work

To start with it was very difficult to get Jessie to take fluids. I have added a few drops of apple juice to her water and now she will quite happily have fluids through a syringe. Just hope we are doing all we can for her which is why i finally decided to join the forum ( always look at it on a daily basis as I have found the information and everyones knowledge on brilliant. I already have 7 other rabbits, all various rescues).
