  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My bunny had myxo and has survived!

That's amazing! well done for nursing her through this! It helps that you have a supportive vet. Many vets would have tried to make you put her to sleep. :)

So sorry about what happened to your other bunnies

Oh my god........ I have never seen a rabbit with mixy before and a credit to you for perservering. :D:)

Thank you. One of the vets I saw originally advised me to have her put to sleep but I refused and asked for a chance as she was still eating and drinking. Subequently my lovely vet Christina was always positive due to the 'eating and drinking' thing.

As for my 4 little ones, I wouldn't wish it on anyone - such a horrid way for them to go ..... :(

to Jack ...

The vet doesn't think there is any kidney damage, that the snuffliness is all 'at the top', as it were. Will keep my eye on her but she is as bright as a button.

Im so please shes pulled through:) She looks a lot worse in them pics then my un vaccinated bunny did that caught myxi sadly he didnt survive:(

Well done Stephy. Don't suppose you spoke to the same lady in Liverpool that I did - she specialises in rehabilitating wild rabbits with myxi? I have 2 myxi survivors living here about 1.5 years after they came down with it. Unfortunately our vets thought we were insane when we said we wanted to treat our bunnies (when I told them we had 2 survivors they said they wouldn't live very long afterwards but they are fighting fit). I did the same treatment as you but also used bisolvon and flushed out the eyes with camomile tea twice a day and used aereomycin cream. I also had to syringe feed and burnt masses of Olbas Oil to help the breathing.

It is an absolutely awful disease but I would encourage people in having a go at treating it even though it is time consuming, costly and very hard work. St Tiggywinkles have successfully treated a number of wild rabbits with myxi too.

Well done to you as well - no I didn't speak to the same lady. You are so right in saying the disease is awful but is just shows how some bunnies can pull through it. Thanks to everyone for your positive comments - I've been feeling so guilty about my other buns, although I'm sure that this was a very unfortunate event...

Gosh she has done well hasn't she!

I'm in Chelmsford too - would you mind telling me what vets practice you have used please - if you don't want to post here would you mind sending me a pm? Sounds as if you have a very 'can do' vet :)

Thanks :)
