Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Treatment for stasis?

Just wondering when Metacam can and cant be given during bouts of stasis. I've heard it can cause ulcers if used on an anorexic bun?

Does anyone have an in depth run down on what medication regime should be followed by the vets?

How often would they require pain relief and gut stimulant?

How long would a vet ideally give a bun with stasis before obtaining x-rays and putting on fluids?

Just compiling some info and want to get it spot on.

Cheers

Vicki

Personally I always use metacam on a stasis bunny as I think the pain of stasis always out weighs the risk of ulcers. Of course when the bunny is taken to the vets with stasis Metacam is usually injected which would cut down the risk of ulcers.

My vet routinely gives fluids to stasis buns, but only x-ray immediately if there is a suspected blockage. They would x-ray later if there was no improvement in the stasis if no blockage was evident at the start.

I will reply to your pm later today

I would always 'opt' for injected meds for a bun in stasis...almost by definition, the guts of a bun in stasis are not working, so oral medication is unlikely to be absorbed effectively and will hang around in the stomach for longer - hence the ulcers! Injected metaclopromide/painkiller would get to work straight away, and this could potentially be followed up later with oral doses if things start to move slowly and that means the bun can be treated by the owner at home :)
