  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Tila's Ostemyelitis, Updates!!

Banni Binky

Warren Scout
So I've been gone from the forum for a while due to real life being a total cow.

BUT I'm back, with some updates!!!

For those who don't remember or weren't around, Tila is my 1yo lop-cross "fatty" as me and my vet affectionately call him. Though he is not overweight he is the biggest lop my vet has seen! . Late last year e was diagnosed with Osteomyelitis. Before disappearing unexpectedly from RU, Tila had begun treatment with incisor removal and had begun on Baytril 0.8ml twice daily.

Since then, he had finished his first course. The vet gave him a 'rest period' of a month, to be able to compare if the Baytril had helped. He had another set of x-rays done in January. The growth on his facial bone, thankfully, had reduced by at least half. The one on his jaw however, had only reduced minimally. She believes this is due to his molars.

He was put onto another 30-day course of Baytril, 0.8ml twice daily. Needless to say Tila has learned the routine, and will do all sorts of tricks and fits to avoid that medicine!! He has almost finished this second course.

The radiography specialist has since examined his films, and has recommended he be on Baytril long-term because although the growths have reduced, they look like they will grow again if left unattended. My vet told me she has treated rabbits with Baytril long term without adverse affects - up to six years. She said as long as he is eating, drinking, pooping and being his normal self personality-wise, he will be fine.

Has anyone had a rabbit, or know anyone who has had a rabbit on Baytril long term?
