  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Missing nail

JadedRed

Young Bun
I was just cleaning the floor when i noticed the area around Arthur's cage was covered with blood. At first i thought it might be urine as he had a red apple last night and we all know how bunny pee changes depending on what they eat but it was definately blood coming from his front paw. I had a look and it seems that one of his nails is missing (the one on the inside of the paw). I have bathed it and dried it but i really cant afford an emergency vet (always on a sunday!). He doesn't seem to be in any pain and is walking on it happily without any sign of a limp. I have confined him to his bed/cage on a clean, dry towel and he's happily munching. Is there anything else i should do? What are the signs of infection (i think i know obviously but you can never be too sure)?

I would just keep an eye on it, maybe bathe it with cooled boiled water?

I'm not sure about the signs of infection, but I guess swelling would be something to watch for?

I think he'll be fine tho - one of mine lost a nail last summer and was ok - it just bleeds a lot:shock: - I just bathed it and kept an eye on him - no vets!

I've had a bun tear off a nail and I did take to vets for antibiotics and pain relief just in case. Always better to be safe than sorry I say. :) Much easier to prevent than cure.
