  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spaying at 4 months

Young Bun
We took our little girl to vets as she had a lump on her belly - turns out that she has an inflamed nipple. The vet advised that as she is 4 months old we could get her spayed now (early) as this could be part of the problem - or wait until she is 6 months old and they could see then. Getting her spayed early is a higher risk for the operation, we're not sure what to do. Has anyboday any suggestions please?

She is old enough to be spayed now, I get rescue rescue doe's done at 14 weeks bucks at 12 weeks. They are lighter in weight so need less anaesthetic and seem to recover much quicker the younger they are . I hope your rabbits will be OK xx

My vet routinely spays does from 4 mths onwards. Bubbles was around 5 mths when she was spayed, and weighed much less than a kilo too, but all was fine. :):) The vet might be saying that it's higher risk to spay now, because he/she isn't so confident with performing the op at a younger age.

Thanks - we're also in the process of trying to bond her with her neutured brother but its not going anywhere at the moment so hopefully once she has recovered from being spayed we can move on bonding process x

I dont like Does to be spayed any younger than 5 months. Before then their ovaries are tiny and friable making them harder to remove. If any ovarian tissue gets left behind then hormonal behavioural problems (aggression, pseudopregnancies etc) will continue and the risk of ovarian cancers remain.

Good luck with whatever you decide :)
