Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My bunny passed away suddenly - why?

Hello,

My precious special bun bun passed away Tuesday and I am hoping someone can give me some answers as to why....

Last week Thursday he stopped eating and I suspected he had spurs (he had had them before). Because we couldn't get to the vat (we were snowed in) I started syringe feeding him with crushed pellets mixed with warm water. He was quite happy taking this. On Saturday, I finally got the car off the driveway and got bun bun to the vet. He went to surgery on Saturday for the spurs and stayed at the vet over the weekend. I collected him Monday evening and brought him home.

He was a house bunny and as soon as he was out his carrycase, he headed for his tunnel (vacuum cleaner box) and really did not want to socialise with us. We left him alone thinking his mouth was just sore. The vet had said to not syringe feed him as he had to start eating naturally asap. We did give him some cuddles and loves but he really just wanted to be left alone.

When I came down in the morning, he didn't make a fuss trying to get out his cage and when I went to open his cage for him, he just lay there all limp. His little head was shaking like Parkinsons and I stroked him and talked to him. When he didn't react, I called the vet straight away to bring him down, but he died within an hour.

The vet said he was probably stressed and that this had upset the bacteria in his caecum. I don't understand why stress would do this? On the Monday night he was hunching his back like he was in pain - I think he was hurt at the vet's. I did question the vet but no-one admitted anything.

Could I have done anything different? I am really doubting myself as a bun-mum. We had 3 fantastic years with bun bun and he should not have died so young.

Any suggestions/ideas would be welcome.

Thank you
Lyndsey

Oh how sad and what an awful shock for you!

I don't know why this would have happened but it sounds to me like you did everything you could possibly have done.

I think this is one for Jack's Jane - she'll probably have an idea of what was wrong with your bun.

You poor thing, how terrible.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Sounds very much like you did everything you possibly could for your bun. Hope you get some answers and peace of mind

was pain killer given during this time period?

Get yourself a rehome bun in your area to refill the energy in your home, many rabbits are waiting for months in a small living area inside a rescue center, waiting for a good home.

here's a list of rescue center in UK

http://www.rabbitrehome.org.uk/centres.asp

or go to the Rabbit In NEED section and see who's available

Or post in the rabbit in need section, many members w/ rescue centers will response to you

So sorry for your loss

Thank you

Thank you all for your kind words. He did receive pain relief so I'm praying that he wasn't in any pain.

He's now come home - we had him cremated and he now enjoys pride of place in my meditation room.

It is strange how bunnies generate such amazing energy - our home feels so empty without that bunergy - I am looking to adopt some rescue bunnies and will hopefully post some positive news soon.

Again, thanks for all your support - this is a great site with fantastic people on it.
