Soft poo's at night only

Claire B

New Kit
Hi,

Sammy (giant rabbit) has soft poo's during the night but normal during the day and running around.

I haven't changed his food and he has carrots and spinach during the day but he does drink a lot during the evening - about half his water bottle.

Do you think it is due to his excess drinking or could it be something else. There is no mucus with them but they are darker then normal and a little wet.

Any advice would be welcome. Thank you.

Are they caecotrophs ?
These are the soft dark poo that a Bun should eat straight from their bum. They look rather like a small bunch of grapes.

Uneaten caecotrphs can mean the Bun is having too much protein/carbohydrate in his/her diet. Or just too much concentrated feed in general. Cutting back on pellet feeds to encourage a better hay intake should help.

But if the problem persists a Vet check may be needed to rule out any Dental problems or any condition which may make it uncomfortable for Bun to reach his/her bum to eat the caecotrophs.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply, this does sound like it.

I will cut back on his food and give him more hay, he mainly has all hay at night and I started to cut his food into thirds as he was eating all his quoter in the morning so he now has a third of a bowl. morning, noon and night.

He has been eating his own poo's as I have seen him doing it, we will see what happens tonight and I will give him his last lot of food earlier and then leave him with hay for the night.

I will let you know what happens over the next 48 hours to see if this helps.
