  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

bunny has meningitis

my little bun is poorly again a couple of days ago i noticed his head was slightly hanging to the left and when he went to clean his ear he stumbled so i put his lead on and took him in the garden and as normal he perked up and started doing his little crazy hops but still his head hung and he lies into me when i pick him up and wants to get down quickly.

so today i took him to the vets because other than his head he is his usual pesky self and playful. the vet said its what the call bunny meningitis and it is caused by a bacteria the vet has given me:

Baytril: 1ml 7days
Panacur suspension cat/dog (i hope thats just the label) 0.75mls 28days

we have had fun getting this in him tonight but got him in a towel and got both in him.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice i hate seeing him poorly and i dont know how long it will take for him to get his balance and his little head straight again. he even slipped down a stair today and he usually loves running up an down them.

will he get better with the antibiotics the vet said i should be giving it him 3/4 times a year from now on as a precautionary so he must think the outlook is good?

My rabbit Wesley got better, it really does depend on the rabbit. He took two to three weeks. He does still lean to the right slightly but its hardly noticable. Yes you need to keep giving the panacur every three months.

Just keep any eye on eating and drinking as Wesley's appetite dwindled and I had to start syringe feeding him.

Meningitis means 'inflammation of the meninges-the lining of the brain and spinal cord. This can be caused by bacteria, viruses or Encephalitozoon Cuniculi (EC)

Aswell as antibiotics (to treat for infection) and Panacur (to treat for EC) your Vet should also have prescribed an anti-inflammatory-eg Metacam-as it is important to minimise the inflammation, whatever the cause. I would strongly advise you to request some Metacam for your Rabbit.

Here is some information about EC

I hope your Bun recovers well :)
