Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Long Haired Rabbit Grooming

Hi

Has anyone got any tips on grooming long haired rabits?

We have a pair of french lop house rabbits, approximately 9 mths old The female is chinchilla, with very flossy light hair, which more or less looks after itself. Her brother is an opal, whose coat is more like cotton wool and he gets very lumpy especially when moulting. His last de-mat (last autumn)was a nightmare, and he returned from the vet's looking like he had tangled with a combine harvester - and lost. Since then, he is really unamused when we try to comb or handle him.

The vet said that shaving may be the only answer next time - but I am convinced the re-growth period would be really uncomfortable and fraught with complications - ingrowing /infected follicles and suchlike. He coat has seriously deteriorated in the last 48 hours and it looks as though he is ready for another de-mat. Would apppreciate any advice as to how to tackle his demat and make him more comfortable and maintain he coat thereafter, whilst overcoming his fears.

Thanks

If you groom him every day, maybe not his whole body but just small amounts, then he will eventually get used to it. I don't care if he doesn't like it  its for his own good!

What about trimming rather than shaving it off completely? Especially around his genitals, obviously get a person or two to hold him steady.
