People who have had EC buns

chloaster

Warren Veteran
One of my buns Thumper has possible EC and I was wondering if his symptoms sounded typical to those of you who have dealt with this - my only other experience of EC was Shayla and she suffered inwardly there were no outward signs.

Is it usual for EC symptoms to "just appear"? Thumper was hopping round fine at 17:00 then wonky at 19:00 - his front left leg gives way under him if he hops too far or shakes himself, his head is slightly tilted to the left but he can pick it up. When I found him initially he was hopping in circles but he is now able to hop in a straight line again..... I did wonder if he had had a stroke but the vet thought it highly unlikely?

Thanks for any thoughts. :)

Sounds exactly like Wesley he was fine and then suddenly one evening I noticed he was falling over and was being really clumsy. Took him to the vet and they said he was leaning to the right i.e. he had got head tilt. They treated him for suspected EC.

has your vet ruled out an inner ear infection ... my old thumps had very similar symptoms ... turned out to be a very bad inner ear infection .

Sounds like Flops when she had her scare. She was fine, then she kept going over on one of her back legs, the vet suspected EC. She is back to normal now after a course of panacur

Sounds like it could be EC or a ear infection.
Vets usually treat for both to be safe.
Hope your bun gets better.....my boy still has head tilt from EC, but at least he is still here to tell the tale (or here for me to tell the tale!!)

With my little girl she was perfectly fine in the evening then next day she was paralysed from the neck down. She was conscious and responsive and continued to eat. After seeing 3 vets who didn't know what was wrong and having xrays done which showed nothing, and being advised to have her put down I rushed her to a specialist, fearing the worst. He said it could be e. cuniculi and started her on treatment. She made a complete recovery in a matter of days and now races around the garden with my other buns :D

With kermit, i went to work and he was fine, came back and his head was tilted about 120degrees from normal! :shock:I thought he had broke his neck!

Thank you for that! I'm really hoping for a full recovery for him - he's got a special place in my heart being my "old man" - he's 8 or 9 now!

 That would have scared me too!! He's not that tilted and can pick it up again but it kind of droops a bit as he sits there. Not that far tho - only about 40' ish

Kermits head is much better now, when he is alert its about 10degrees to the side, but when he is resting it can be about 90....but he seems to manage ok, just a wee squinty head boy.
Alot of buns get totally better over a few days, so there is hope.....fingers crossed.

Come on Thumper, we're rooting for you!:thumb:
With my bun the treatment given was i.v fluids, a steroid injection, septrin suspension and panacur for 28 days. The problem with e.c is that it is impossible to be sure that it is the cause of the illness as tests on a surviving rabbit aren't conclusive

Hi Chloe

Not been on much lately so only just spotted this post. This sounds just like Sooty's symptoms, he had baytril and metacam for a week, panacur for a month and after the baytril another antibiotic injected daily for 10 days).

He was very wobbly - a bit drunk looking and kept falling over, this improved slightly and then he got a slight head tilt. We were really panicky at first because he was off his food, but got him eating again and his wobble has gone and head has gone straight again.

As you know Syrup (his wifey bun) had a huge fight with him so they are currently living separately and both bunnies are a million times more affectionate with me now. Sooty will let me pick him up which he never did before and will go to sleep while I am stroking him. I think that he realises that we helped him to get better.

Syrup will actually let me stroke her which she wouldn't stand before. Funny Bunnies :lol:

I really hope that Thumper pulls through this and that your other bunnies are more sympathetic than Syrup.

Thanks guys. He doesn't appear to be showing any change as yet - Jess chased him up and down the garden yesterday and he gave her a run for her money so still sprightly despite his age and tilt! Jess is also his main pillow so I think she was making sure he still got his exercise too .....

Is it normal that he feels "twisted" in my arms when I pick him up? With his feet off the ground his whole body is kind of banana shaped to the left where the weakness seems to be. Bless him he hates the Panacur and Baytril but loves the Metacam - tried to eat the bottle yesterday!

My pillow Jess

I've been lucky enough not to deal directly with torticollis but when I saw my vet nurses rabbit Fudge with severe headtilt he had a rolling episode so bad that I had to pick him up so he couldn't hurt himself, and his body was definately tensed and twisted along the spine where his lack of co-ordination was causing his body to attempt to go over sideways. It's hard to explain, but I know what you mean!

My suspected EC bunnies have always seemed to suffer with organ failure so my experience is limited to dealing with that aspect really :(

Sooty was a bit like that and looked very much like Thumper in the picture (he still does, but only very slightly now).

He felt sort of hunched to pick up and almost as I would imagine a bunny with a stroke would be, although the vet said that this would be unlikely to be the cause.

Glad to hear that Jess is being a great nurse

She could teach Syrup a thing or two :lol:

as you know sooty's only symptom has been urinary incontinents & no head tilt but it does sound like EC is suspect, especially if he's holding himself funny in your arms, rather than just a balance issue. Hope it clears up for him soon.

Kermit felt awkward when i picked him up when he was really ill....now i dont pick him up at all, i find that it unsettles his balance and he rolls alot when i put him back down....he is just a ground bunster now :)
I lift him very quickly when im taking him to the vets, and when in the vets she examines him mostly in his box on the floor if she can.
It can take weeks for signs of improvement to the head tilt, and often it doesnt even improve, but buns are good at coping with it, my boy can run about at the same speed he always done.

Digger's head tilt suddenly appeared from nowhere too. :?
It did take 2, 6 week courses of panacur to finally come back to just a slight tilt. Vet gave him Batrill to rule out ear infection just incase.
He has certainly been through the wars this winter, but we are getting there now, and new bun Holly as helped him too. :D
