  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi
I have a bunny with a middle ear infection ans subsequently..headtilt.

I have meds from my vet.. metacam..penicillin injections..bio lapis..but I'm desperate to try and control her rolling.
I have asked my vet for some meclizine but she said no.
I know many people who have buns with headtilt who have advised I get some.. (onthewonk)
My problem is I cant find anything with meclizine in.. I have found some anti sickness tablets with meclozine hydrochloride in but thats it.. are these the same? I searched meclozine and got results for meclizine instead .. im too scared to give it her until i know.
you guys on here tend to reply faster then my other forum.

Why did your vets refuse to give it to you?
Would they perhaps consider Stemetil instead?

Stemetil?
I've never heard of it, so I dont know.
Is that for vertigo too?

My vet said it wasnt proven for use in rabbits.

Please just be aware that even if people recommend a medication on here it is only their experience with that drug and can only go off that experience andnot advise you to obtain it as we are not of a professional capacity do so:? If you are not happy with what your vet has prescribed then seek a 2nd opinion

I agree
Please dont administer medication to your Rabbit with out the say-so of a Qualified Vet.
Perhaps your Bun needs a higher dose of Metacam ? Again ask the Vet before increasing it

A couple of my 'Headtilt' Rabbits have been prescribed Stemetil in conjunction with antibiotics and Metacam. I believe the Stemetil did help and neither Rabbit had any adverse side effects.
If your Vet is not confident at prescribing it then perhaps he/she could seek advice from the Rabbit Clinic in Bristol
