  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spondylosis?

I have one bun with it - I've known about it for years. SHe was a rescue bun and horribly overweight when I met her at around 3. She's 6-7 years old now. She probably got it from being kept in too small a cage and not allowed to run around so her spine didn't develop properly. It came to light in an x-ray when we were investigating why she had a mucky bum. She's been on metacam for years - increasing amounts over time. SHe is now on maximum dose. She still has mucky bum at times so I am treating her with rearguard most of the year and checking her bum, and sometimes cleaning it daily. Apart from the bum she does not show obvious signs of problems although the height she will jump has reduced over the years. Have just got her a lower litter tray as she started to poo outside her usual one. I am worried that the effect of the metacam is wearing off therefore she is in pain and therefore not collecting her poos as her bum is getting a bit worse.

Thanks for that Bunnylover, our girl has been here since birth, she's now five and gradually looks like she's giving up the fight :(
She's very stiff with all this cold weather but once she's out and has woken up and stretched she seems fine
