has/does anyone have this problem?

winnies angel

Mama Doe
As you know Angel has poorly eye she has drops everyday which seems to work. It guks up waters a lot. Last year she had to constantly get it flushed out every other day for couple of month and some of them were with a Ga.
Drops seem to be good she went good couple of months without flushing then had to get it done and was fine again on drops.
Vet was going to put drain in but on x-ray it showed its her teeth, she has mouth disease and teeth growing all over, her right tooth roots is whats pushing on tear duct apparantky so she said she cant do drain as its her tooth thats the problem to her eye.
Needed more drops but instead of getting them vet (previous drop vet was old not bun ones, this is bun vet one who done xrays) decide she wanted to see what would happen if we stopped the drops, soooo
We did next day was watery few days bit guk left her untill week later when it was pretty bad took her in to get flush and drops, vet was Ahh I see she used bag of saline solution and although the channel was clear guk was still coming out so she has blockage some where where vet cant see, vet now ants to put some liquid through eye to show up on another x-ray to see where its blocked and put a drain in???
Has anyone had this problem, shes fine with drops if we use everyday what do others think??

Hmmm I have a bun with tear duct probelms, but no where near as excessive as Angels..

Can I ask which vets you use?

Did she have any work done on her teeth to relieve the pressure of the roots?

sorry not much help but how spooky .. I have a bun called Angel who has problems with her eyes!

hi

No she hasn't had any teeth root work just dentals, her teeth are pretty bad she has ones growing under the gums and along the gum line. Aswell as ones growing out in S shapes etc. The first vet that looked at her mouth said its a very dangerous procedure to remove teeth as the roots are so high and it will damage her bones in cheek, so if we can control with eye drops then its fine.
We then moved to our first ever vet (she had originally went emergency only) she never saw Angel before and done x-ray while she was having dental and gave the mouth disease etc so she couldn't do a drain as its her teeth thats problem not her eye really.
Now though shes talking drain again and wanting to see where the guk stays??
Im confused I thought if the drops are working and she only needs to have flushed every few months then why put her through it?
Also obv if could stop all together with drain then fair enough but no guarantee to this, I dont want her to suffer look deformed for nothing (looks aren't important to me but you know what I mean) and still have to go through flushing etc anyway.

ignore this sorry

:censored::censored:I just spent ages typing and pressed delete or summit by mistake.doh

Anyway No she aint had roots done said it was too tricky (previous vet) and can deform her face taking teeth out as the roots are high set so control with drops. Which we have been good then our bun vet (1st vet we ever saw went now came back to this area) saw Angel for first time when she needed Dental and said she wanted to xray to see if a drain would help. She did xray and said drain would be no good as its her tooth not eye but she has bad mouth teeth growing under gums/along gum line and sticking out in all directions 's' shapes she has mouth disease.
So kept going with other vets drops however she doesnt understand why these drops work as its a antibiotic and shouldnt make difference anyway so try stopping them and see if she can build up her own resistance. Didnt work so she saw for herself after a week what happens so she wants to xray her eye this time o see where the guk is blocked and try to make drain.
Im worried though we have put her through so much and no guarantee this will work. I know it might and then she wont need drops at all but what if we put her through it for nothing and still end up having to flush and drain.
I dont want to make her deformed unnessaryily either?
Surely if drops are working then we would be able to carry on with these (no real long term risks) even if vet doesnt think they should work?
Its much worse guk when she eats yet her teeth are good (for her anyway)

Hi, my rabbit Smudge has a similar kind of problem. When I got him from rescue he had bad runny eyes and was on meds. I had tear ducts flushed loads of times. Then he had loads of x-rays of his head where we discovered the problems were his teeth. He has elongated tooth roots worse at the bottom, the roots are so long and growing all over the place they are actually trying to go through his bottom jaw. This makes them press on nerves which caused him pain. His x-rays were referred to a rabbit specialist vet to see if he suggested any sort of surgery, other than normal dentals. He came back and said no surgery was possible and that it was the worse case of dental disease he had ever seen in a rabbit that was only a year old!

Anyway that was last year and since then he has come on in leaps and bounds now we have got his meds and routine right. He is on Metacam and Baytril twice a day and will certainly have to stay on the Metacam for the rest of his life. The specialist vet wants him to stay on Baytril for at least a year which is up in a few months time as he said this will hopefully stop him from getting abcess's on jaw. He has to go to vets once a month for a thorough checkup of his teeth and mouth and usually has to have a small amount taken off his lower incisors, he usually has to have a dental op about every 2-3 months to burr down th spurs as well. I wish I could get him to eat hay as this would help him but I have tried all sorts and he just won't eat it!!

His eyes have also greatly improved and he has had no weeping or gunk coming from either eye for quite a few months now and I stopped the eye drops months ago too.

So just to let you know there is hope for your bun, and offer encouragement really they can live with bad dental disease if pain and infections can be brought under control:wave:

Are you talking about Honor Etherington?

I can honestly say she is the best vet to go to with regards to rabbits around here, so I would go with what she says. She would never put a rabbit through anything unneccesarily so she will be doing anything she can to pin point the problem. :)

I'm wondering if the concern regarding the prolonged usage of the drops is perhaps because eventually Angel will build up a natural resistance to them? The same applies with antibiotics..over long term use they will inevitably become ineffective.

Thanks guys yeah its Aunty Honor well thats why we totally trust her cause she is mint (thats why I wrote about her in book Not just a Rabbit) I understand the usage of drops building a resistance but if they work fine now then coldnt this be looked at when they stop.
Angel isn't in pain (not on med) just her eye guks real white guk and then ends up closed if she doesnt get drops. Vet said she mayhave to have teeth removed later in life due to mouth disease but fine at mo. Its just that stupid eye only her right one!
Thats what I dont get the 1st xray she said noway could she make chanel and now she wants another to see if she can make one?:?

Maybe she didn't want to make a channel unnecessarily originally, and now perhaps it's a chance to make her better. After all, I'm sure if there was a chance that the problem could be solved you would want to take it?
Why don't you give Honor a call and talk it through with her so that you understand her reasons for wanting to do the op?:)

I'm their tomorrow so speak then Angel has x-ray next week. I was just wondering what others was done that was all.
Obv if it helps I will do it I mean we have spent in 18months had her £3,4,000 on vet bills just on her mainly eye so if this works it is going to be a huge saving aswell as health benefits.
Obv Honor is a really good rabbit vet who knows everything bunny. So whatever she says goes in our house! Just wanted to know what others had done to help.
