Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Tear duct Blocked - what happens now

Hello
I took Honey to the vets last night as she has a very sore eye.

She had it when I got her and we took her to the vets and they gave me eye drops and Baytril to sort her out. (She had conjunctivitis)

Well it seemed to improve for a whille, but I noticed over the weekend it was quite sore again.
So back to the vets last night and she still has an infection.

Since she was a good girl and easy to handle the vet said they would try and flush the tear duct.
Unfortunately, it is blocked, so they have given me another lot of eye drops and I'm to take her back on Friday.

DOes anyone know what will happen next if the drops don't work?

Poor Honey!:cry::cry:

I have 2 bunnies with blocked tear ducts and have had many flushes and drops (been going on for a year now)! Nothing has worked so i just have to keep it clean! I do masage the eye and that sort of helps a little but still goes back to the same!

They are both getting bonded so will hopefull keep each others eyes clean!

I think it may be to do with tooth roots but not too sure:?

Hope someone comes along with more info as i could use it also :D:wave:

Hi and Thank You

I have posted something similar on Rabbit Chat and Jacks-Jane has said it could be a lifelong thing. I hope not for her sake.

I do know she used to lay on woodchippings in the pet shop, so am hoping it is just the dust from that in the duct, but if not, we'll do what we have to do.

Maybe a little boy might be able to help keep it clean:lol::lol::lol:

A little friend might help keep it clean. ;)

I had this with one of mine when I first got him and now I only use dust free hay and vetbeds and don't have a problem. He had his flushed a couple of times conscious but I now some vets prefer to sedate. The drops that seemed to clear them up began with an F and was in an orange packet I think - it was about 4 years ago so am a bit vague now.

you can use natural tear drop on the bunny's eyes, as many times as you want, it's perfectly okay to drop it on his eyes. It does not solve the problem, but the moisture makes their eyes more comfy.

I have use it before on Bernie when there is a piece of fur stuck on his eyes. I drop enough eye drop for it to flush the fur off his eyes.

The brand name I use is called Allergan Refresh Celluvisc, there is no preservative in the substance.
