  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Snotty nose

I went to feed the buns as usual this morning. Whilst Penny 'Pocket' was eating she had a sneezing fit. This is not too unusual for her but when she had finished there was a bit of white gunk coming out which I wiped away. Should I be worried? In all other areas she is fine. She is kept in an outside summer house with three other buns, is not kept on any wood shavings - she is on hay and has easibed in her litter tray.

I would ask your Vet to check her over.
She may have the start of a Respiratory Tract infection and its always best to catch them early.
Ask your Vet to check Penny's teeth too. A flare up of 'Snuffles' can sometimes be a secondary symptom of Dental problems.

Good luck

Thanks I will do that. I just know that he's going to give me antibiotics which will be a nightmare trying to get down her. She is what you would call 'a handful' - a bun with attitude bless her.

Hehe, a handful hey? I used to have a girl bun like that, they sure keep you on your toes! :D

I'd take her to the vet also to make sure that she's not contagious - you don't want your other buns to get sick.

Definately get her some antibiotics, my bunny has sniffles too and has just been diagnosed with head tilt. Sniffles or discharge from their noses is a symptom and while alone I'm sure she'll be fine.
Does she displayes any other symptoms like have sticky eye(s) or make nasal noises and have any discharge in her ear(s) ?

If she does tell your vet about all of these and any treatment by antibiotics now could make the difference to your bun.
