You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Baytril Side effects/allergies?

New Kit
Hi all,
I live in the states, and i have a brown lop eared bun named "Brownie" well he's been kinda sick lately so last weekend we took him to the vet and the vet told us he had Pasturella (which i had already figured out on my own). Anyways, the dr sent us home with a bottle of Baytril (antibiotic) and some other Bay stuff that is a probiotic. Well i have been giving brownie his meds via carrot babyfood and yogurt, which he seems to like.
But now for the past 2 days i noticed these strands of fur hanging down from his chin. So yesterday i cut them off cause it was getting in his carrot food and turning into a big orange glob of fur! But i noticed them back again today. I don;t know if the Baytril is causing the fur to fall out or if maybe he is jsut scratching himself? Any ideas about any of this?

He may have Dental problems.
I am guessing that his Pasteurella was diagnosed as he has a snotty nose/sneezing/gunky eyes-AKA 'Snuffles'
Snuffles can flare up as a secondary symptom of another underlying condition.
If your Bun is only willing to eat mushy food, has Snuffles and a wet chin (which will cause the fur to fall out) I'd say Dental problems are high on the list of causative suspects

xx

Baytril also tastes pretty bitter and can cause excess salivation when given so if no other cause found then this may be responsible. I would advise that further investigation is carried out to check for other problems and get a definitive diagnosis

Baytril

Yes he did start off with snotty nose, sneezing, drippy eye. As far as his teeth, when we had him at the vet, the dr checked his heart lungs stomach and teeth and said that everything was normal and looked and sounded good. So he doesn;t have any teeth problems. The salivation could be a possiblity. He eats his normal pellets and carrots and things. So he's eating normally and pooping normally, he's jsut all snotty and sneezy. His eye seems to have cleared up though, so that one good thing. but he's still "snuffing" and sneezing! I'm jsut using the carrot baby food and the yogurt to disguise the Baytril and the probiotic.
Well, i'll keep giving him the antibiotic and probiotic until he finishes the bottle, and if he's still snotty and sneezy i'll take him back to the vet. They might have to check what kind of strain of pasturella he has.

did vet do dental x rays...look at back teeth with an instrument and check alignement or both front and back?i know a non rabbit savvy vet who checks teeth by looking only at the front ones if this is what was done get a savvyvet to check the back ones too!!!

Yes, the vet stuck some kind of instrument into his mouth to look at his back teeth. Which of course he didn;t appreciate much and proceeded to chew on the tube end of the instrument. My poor bun! He was soo traumatized that day. he got a thermometer up his butt, tube stuck in his mouth, 100cc's of saline under the skin on his back cause he was dehydrated, and a needle full of baytril. He was not a very happy bunny when we finally got back to the house!

your vet didn't do the x-ray. It's highly possible that a tooth growing upwards towards the jaw is causing all these, and thus the snuffles. Your vet has to be a rabbit savvy specialist, and put your bun in a deep sedation, and then use x-ray to go around the head and take the x-ray to see what's wrong w/ the teeth inside the jaw

Good News!

Good news! Brownie seems to be all well again. Even though he dumped his applesauce with the antibiotic in it all over! but i've had his cage door open for the past 3 nights and he never came out of his cage. Now all of a sudden, last night i find him hopping all over the place. Not only was he hopping, he was also binkying, scratching at the rug, and flipping my bf's sock around. Not to mention, pooing everywhere, including on my bf's sock! hehehe:p which of course he wasn;t too happy about! lol But, His antibiotic still isn;t finish yet so i'll keep up with that, and he still "snuffs" sometimes so maybe he's only halfway better. I'm glad he at least hopping around and stuff. And he's bullying the cat around again!;)
