Can you have a number of vets?

Hiya

I'm thinking about getting my rabbits another vet as they have once too many given me wrong information. It's only from here that I know it's incorrect. They just don't seem rabbit-savvy, although they were partly good with the spaying my rabbits had, they still gave incorrect information to me. I trust them with my dog and cat, just not with my rabbits. Can you have a number of vets? And does anyone know of a rabbit-savvy vet in North-West London, Harrow/Stanmore/Watford/Ruislip? Not too far from here, in case of emergency in the future and the distance needed to get to it.

I have 3 vets, one as general, 1 for mice and one now for buns :) each are more experienced in certain areas. General vet I use for minor things on all, but for more adanced tings like ps etc.. I use others :)

Probably the best bunny vet round your way is Guy Carter at Medivet Watford...he won't come cheap though so I'd get them insured!

It's perfectly acceptable to have different vets for different pets - the only time it's difficult is if you take the same animal to more than one vet - veterinary etiquette suggests that any second opinion/referral etc should be done formally and the notes transferred across to the new treating vet - so it would be fine to take the buns elsewhere but you would need to get your new vet to ring your 'old' vet to get the files for those specific animals transferred. It happens all the time, it's not a problem :)

 Ok, I'll start looking now. Any one know of any in my area? How can you tell they are rabbit-savvy without handing over money?

ETA: I thought Medivet were bad, or is it just cos they are expensive? :?

Just like any chain, it depends on the individual vet that you see. I know people who have had hideous experiences with medivet, but you could just as equally say that they had a hideous experience with a particular vet...who happened to be working for medivet at the time. They are known for being expensive though. Guy has a huge reputation for being good with bunnies, at one stage he was probably more well known than FHB.

He sounds good. Can you ask for a specific vet in a practice when you go, as we usually just turn up (with an appointment) and see whichever one is there?

Yes I've asked to see a specific vet for years, whichever practice I've been going to. You might need to be a bit more flexible with times depending on who is consulting and when, but it's generally fine. Obviously if there's an emergency then you'd have to see whoever is available but I'd have thought that if they have a rabbit 'expert' they'd put bunnies under their care where possible anyway.

Can I ask roughly how much it would cost for a consultation (for example) at medivet? Cos I'm paying for it myself, I need to know if I can afford it.

Not a clue, I'm not even sure it will be standard across all practices so you're probably best ringing up and asking - make clear you're asking as a potential new client of the practice and not as a referral though, as that cost may well be different.

I don't know how much a consultation is but I did ring about prices for a few things as Guy Carter is so well known. They are very expensive. A conscious dental is around £37 and they quoted me over £200 to have front teeth removed. My vet only charges £70 for front teeth removal.

There number is 01923 243429 if you want to give them a call :D

Lol, i have four vets but i have to really. I have one for bun (and dogs) in manchester and one for bun in notts and i have an exotic vet for my snakes in both notts and manchester. Can get very confusing. I also have a fifth i will be getting fidget spayed at in manchester as the others, albeit great vets, charge an absolute fortune for speying.

Interesting - I don't think it's too outrageous though, when I was working with another rescue round here, both her vet and my vet quoted around £150 for incisor removal. I pay £90 for a standard molar dental at my practice. When my previous practice became a medivet I have vague recollections that the actual consultations and stuff weren't outrageous - it was things like blood tests and x-rays that they charged substantially higher amounts for, but I have no idea if they have standard pricing or if they all operate according to where they are.

I'm only really interested in the routine stuff (consultations, vaccs etc) as the other stuff would get paid by insurance (when I get some) or by my parents :)lol:) or bank. My vets now charge £30 consultation, and £15 each vaccs.

My bunnies have two vets. One is local and is just for vaccinations and check-ups and for anything else we travel to see a rabbit specialist. I've become tired of having to tell my local vet what is wrong with my own rabbits.
