Anyone from Gloucester?

Do you buy hay bales from a farm instead of bags of hay from the pet shop? If so, where do you buy the bales from?

The place I normally get mine from haven't got any until the end of next week and I really don't want to pay another £3.80 for a bag when I can buy a bale for £3.70.

There is a rabbit sanctuary in Gloucester, who is a member on here, and it might be worth checking where they get their hay.

hi i used to live in gloucester there are lots of farms in the hardwisk area and try the equestrain centres sure tehy would sell you some.... mum is in gloucester(but doesnt come on ru much htese days) think she buys her hay from the local vets in quedgeley glos.. thats at teh animal hospital if you know it? good luck in your hunt. xx

I live in gloucester and I used to get p@h hay as struggled to find nice stuff around, my latest bale is from the pet shop in Tuffley, costs £2.70 (so quite pricey) but is very good quality, best i've ever seen since ive had these buns!! Nice big bale and no complaints by the rabbits.

Where abouts in gloucester are you?

  • Theres also a pet shop in gloucester town (which i'm not recommending sorry...:()
  • Pets Mate in quedgeley... also not the best for hay with one or two poor hays
  • A pet shop at the animal hospital in quedgeley - which is also my very rabbit savvy vets! - which only offers one hay
  • Pets at Home on Bristol Road, wider selection, there own brand nice and soft for bedding, little eaten by my buns now better is available (although Spice ate it fine before!), they sell excel, excel herbage, scratch and neuton (very nice by pricey for little in the bag!)
  • The tuffeley store is very small and offers two/three options including £1 bag which they get from larger farm bales, seems nice but can be dusty depends on the bag u get :) The hay i've bought says pillow wad...something haha. I have seen it not as good quality but this bale is perfect :D

Sorry i just noticed u said bale and not bags!

I could maybe get some from my college (Hartpury College) coz they sell it for the horses, I can definatly enquire about how much it would cost and whether i could buy it for my rabbits (can't see why not! lol) i am going in to uni on wednesday so will find out then!

Thanks Sam. I wouldn't recommend the petshop in town to anyone either.:? I wasn't very impressed with Petsmate in Quedgely last time I went. Have you seen the little part in the back where they have rabbits and piggies etc? It was heartbreaking and I had to come out. The cages were so small and dirty.:(

I'm in Brockworth BTW. The hay I get from our pet shop normally, says 'Kimberly Hay' on the bag. It is lovely hay but expensive for what you get compared to a bale.

oh where's the one in brockworth? My o/h works there occasionally so next time i drive up would love to stop in a see haha. The little shop in gloucester sells kimberley hay (in a brown paper kinda bag) didn't like that i couldn't see the hay but i asked to look at soom and were friendly people who said i could go stroke all the animals and see the hay in their cages. Poor bunnies and g.pigs on the sawdust but the hay seemed ok but none of them were really eating it so i was put off.

Yeah the pets mate isn't great, the elderly owner is unknowledgeable and 'stuck in the past' and the girls there...well. lets just say my friend got a job there and was fired for trying to look after the animals too much and not socialise with the staff more.... i mean.... That is where i got Spice from though... i really couldnt resist when i saw her! I don't like looking at the animals specially now i know how there kept/cared for/etc from my friend working there.

While were on it are there any other pet shops up 'that end' of gloucester hehe

The Brockworth one is in Court Road, right at the bottom opposite Lloyds Bank. They only sell fish, no animals. They used to have a resident rabbit but he died a few months back. :( They are pretty friendly in there although it's only small and don't really stock that much.

There aren't any other pet shops up this way, I don't think. There is a place called Mixed Feeds in Witcombe which sell hay, sawdust and other Animal feeds. I have ordered A+P from there before. Thats the place that don't have any hay at the moment.

All of my buns love the Kimberly hay, the rabbits are quite often really nervous in that shop, so maybe they were too nervous to eat it. :? Or they were such a young age, they didn't know what to do with it. I have seen baby buns in there before which only looked about 4 weeks old. :(

Sounds great will defiantly pop in, me and my (equally animal mad) friends love new pet shops... even if they all do mainly sell the same stuff haha. As we have a quite a few different small animals between us theres hopefully always something different...even if its just the layout! hehe

I might go scout the prices in country wide (although they normally seem the higher end) too.... :) Ever need anything just msg me, nice to meet local RU's :D

Did you ever use The Hair of The Dog? It used to be at the old Cattle Market then moved to Westgate Island. They have recently closed down but apparantly there is a Jolly's Petshop opening up there. So there's another one you could have a look at. :thumb:

Ooo no i havn't, i've been in gloucester for a year and a half now, only really been searching the pet shops since summer/autumn time, but will definatly keep an ear open for the opening of that! Thanks for the info :D
