Oh I am so sorry

If you have other Rabbits then my personal opinion is that yes, you should contact your Vet and discuss a PM. It may be that your dear Bun had a heart problem or something similar and it wont effect your other Rabbits. But in my opinion any sudden death needs investigating, particularly in a multi-Rabbit household.

Again, I am so sorry for your tragic loss

Im really sorry to hear thoughts are with you if you have other rabbits it would be worth finding out what she died from

Hi there.

I am sorry to hear your news.

It would be a good idea to have a PM, but this needs to be done asap (within an hour/few hours or so of the rabbit passing away).

Was your rabbit vaccinated against VHD? This is one of the most common causes of rabbits passing away very little advance warning of them being poorly.

There are so many things it could be so I would get a PM, and it will protect any other bunnies that you may have.

It is possible for bunnies to die of shock (from a fox visiting for example) or from extremes of temperature, and/or gut stasis.

Your vet should be able to organise cremation for you if this is what you would like, and if a PM is to be done, then this is the normal thing to happen rather than the pet being returned for a burial.

So sorry.

Helen

Thankyou for your kind words and advice. i do have one other bun, so i think a PM may be best. she wasnt vaccinated against vhd on advice of my vet, but was against mxyi (definately not that as eyes are clear)

im thinking she may have injested some lino, as she has chewed the base of her hutch which is lino lined.

im just gutted, she was my baby girl and she was such a good natured bun, she acted more like a dog :cry:

Im so sorry. it must be awful to find her like that. Ive had simular situations with pet rats.

may i ask why your vet adviced against VHD?

(((hugs)))

Im so very sorry to hear this, a PM would be best, i was once advised that VHD was unheard of in my area and i didn't need to vaccinate (this was our old vets) our new one told us to vaccinate, i didn't and we lost 10 rabbits to VHD.

i would get a pm done but prehaps with a different vet, a good rabbit savvy vet will be able to tell you so much more than a standerd vet. unfortunatly they dont get much training and have to do a lot of it off their own backs and with rabbits being classed as exotics there is so much more to specialise in.

so sorry for your loss, i would also get the remaining bunny vaccinated asap against vhd... there is no cure and it results in death. the myxi should be done every 6 months to be effective. im so sorry you have gone through this was the rabbit off its food at all or showing any signs? dont beat yourself up as rabbits are prey animials they hide any symptoms very well and will go down hill rapidly. for future reference keep an eye on the other bun as sometimes after losing a partner they can really pine. if bun is female speying is essential as 85% die of uterine cnacer which speying removes the chances of it also means they can go on to live with a partner (if eh is neutered too) and it would be loverly if in time when you have come to terms with the death of your beloved rabbit that you may be able to find a place in your heart to take on a rescue rabbit as a freind for your remaining bunny? good lcuk do let us know the results of any tests that are done be free at the bridge sweet bunny. xx

We were told not to vaccinate because the disease is unheard of in this area, also if i was adament i wanted it, it would be £50 for it, and the vaccine was enough to do 5 rabbits, but it could only be kept out for 12 hours so i would need to get 5 friedns all at the same time to have it done.

She showed no signs at all of illness :(

My remaining bun didnt live with Honey, they never got on so we had to keep them seperate, i will be however getting her vaccinated asap at a different vets.

I rang my vets this am and they said that as we dont know what time she died the PM would probably not be worth doing as they needed "a fresh sample" and that once she had been dead for so long, most things wouldnt show up on a PM so not sure what to think about that???

Im not sure about getting any more rabbits, but maybe later in the future i may think about it. Honey stole my heart and now its broken :(

Unfortunately with VHD you don't generally see warning signs and if you do it usually too late.....my vet told me they don't see clinical cases of it,bunnies just die. :(

The vaccination IS available in single dose packs so your vet should be able to obtain it, costs about £15 per bunny at my vets.

I'm so sorry for your loss :(

But i would consider using a different vet - having to find other buns to be vaccinated is ridiculous. Even if a disease is unhear dof in an area, what's the stop it spreading there?!

I hope that you are able to obtain some closure by a PM and that your remaining bun is safe and happy Xx

I'm so sorry for the loss of your bun. Is it worth giving another vet a call and seeing if they think the same about the PM?
If you post the general area where you are someone here may be able to recommend a rabbit savvy vet near you.
I'm so sorry. Binky free Honey x x x

I am sao sorry for your loss.
Your vet and wanting to charge you £50 for the vacine is bang out of order as it only costs about £6.00(for the5dose vaccs) for the vaccine so even if he charged you a £10 and thew the other away he is still making on it:?
