  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I had to give my rabbit up a year ago but thankfully my mum took him in so I get to see him. I went over the other day and he was biting like himself like crazy. I checked him out and he has mites. The thing is his skin is looking really bad through biting so I was wondering what should we use to get rid of the mites and what should we do to clear up his skin? I've used Spot on before which has worked but is it ok to use with his skin in such a state. The other thing is he's quite old so I don't realy want to bath him or anything because it's freezing here and Im worried he'll die or something. Thanks guys:)

you could take him to the vets hwo will do an ivermetican injection more expensive than going to pah and buying the spot on stuff(£4) but if his skin is raw i think its sensible. x

Your Rabbit needs to be examined by a Vet. It sounds as though he may have a secondary dermatitis aswell as mites. He will be very uncomfortable. He will need treatment only available on prescription.

Mites are often a secondary symptom of another underlying problem, especially Dental trouble. This is another reason to get a Vet to thoroughly examin him

Good luck :)
