Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Fly strike / Myasis

What are the symptoms of Fly Strike?

We seem to have been invaded by flies and I am now paranoid that my rabbits might have Fly Strike.

The room the rabbits are in is hoovered and cleaned daily and their litter trays cleaned out and disinfected every other day. I can't see any maggots or flies in their room and the bunnies themselves seem happy enough and are eating and behaving normally (well normally for them anyway). I can't see any flies or maggots on the bunnies either and their fur isn't damp or dirty around their bottoms....

I just want to know where these flies are coming from and if they are a threat to my bunnies. I had a dream last night about them having fly strike and now its stuck in my head and I am paranoid as I know fly strike can be fatal and quick to.

Fly strike is normally from blow flies and blue bottles. They can lay eggs in your rabbits fur and it can be hard to detect. They are like tiny cream cigar shapes, you should give your bunnies a thorough checj.

To be on the safe side you could contact your vet to get some Rearguard guard and treat them with that (prescription only), this prevents eggs from hatching.

If eggs do hatch then they become maggots and basically eat your rabbit, your rabbit can go into shock.

Fingers crossed they are OK but as a precaution it is best to Rearguard them asap.
