Broken Leg :( - UD Phoebe is back home

Shel

Warren Scout
What a day! I was expecting my family over to share a late xmas, when I noticed Phoebe wasn't right. She was right yesterday but nothing I could put my finger on. I noticed her place in the pecking order had changed and she was quiet but she was eating well. However this morning I was watching her in the garden and I noticed her front paw lifted off the ground. I rushed her to my vet, but the one I normally see was holiday. The vet i saw was very nice, but had little rabbit expertise. She told me Phoebe would have to have GA to have an xray before they could do anything. I asked her what the options were for broken legs. She mentioned splinting but this was rarely successful, the other option - amputation (and the danger of GA again!).
Well at this point, with my normal rabbit vet on holiday I decided I would go to another vet quite a few miles away who i had heard about. They had a reputation amongst rabbit owners as being very successful. I managed to get an appointment with the vet specialising in orthopedic surgery. He sedated her (not GA) to xray and fixed the bones so they would fuse together nicely. He then put a splint over the top.
The lesson I learnt today - don't always go with the first opinion of your vet. I really wanted to avoid GA if possible as I know the risks - although it is much better for rabbits now. Find a vet who knows rabbit medicine - they are precious.
Well she is not completely out of the woods yet, but i know she is good hands and she has Casey with her to help. I look forward to picking her up tommorow I hope (fingers crossed). Then I have the joy of trying to reintroduce her to the group:roll:- to be honest I don't mind, I just want my Phoebe back.

Oh poor little girly, sending vibes for a speedy recovery x
Good advice about finding a vet that knows about rabbit medicine. They are very precious :)

So glad they have managed to "fix" her - I whooped up the stairs to Andy when I got your text  He had no idea what I was on about but Yay!! So glad she's going to be ok. Give her and Casey a noserub from me when they get home.x

OMG what a stressful time you've been having  Hope Phoebe is well and truly on the mend ... sending lots of healing vibes xx

I have to thank you soo much for being there today. You kept me from losing it completely. THANK YOU:)

Well Phoebe came back from the vet with her splint. She has been very good not to nibble it - however Laura seems to think it tastes nice:roll:. I reintroduced Phoebe and Casey to Laura and Kirsty in my kitchen (neutral territory). All went very smoothly and they are back in the shed together. Only have to stop her jumping and getting wet for 8 weeks:shock:

Glad to see that she's home Michelle and that the group has gone back together without any major problems. That splint is very cute! Be a good girl Phoebe and don't nibble it! Good luck with the not jumping/getting wet thing .... x

Awwww - look at her and her plaster! So glad they all went back together ok - like Abi said - good luck with the not getting wet / no jumping!!

:D I have a cunning plan to keep her dry outside!! It involves a large pair of rubber gloves and a pair of scissors - yep I am going to make her a welly:lol: - will get picture of her showing it off.

   Definately looking forward to that pic!!

OK the first Rabbit welly design was flawed. I tried the rubber glove - not stretchy enough. I tried a Latex examination glove - stretchy enough so she wore it in the garden. However after only 10 mins of garden time she had a hole in it - there must be something else!! Any ideas of how to waterproof a dressing? My OH suggested a condom:shock:

I am having trouble with the stretchyness of it. It is quite a large bandage, and she drags it underneath her - so it has to be quite strong too. I still have the problem outside with her jumping too. She runs around like a maniac. She has even reclaimed her status as top bun. She is one tough cookie eh!
We have built this holiday a bigger, walk in, roofed run. So this should help while i work out how to keep a rabbit in the garden, but stopping her tearing round, jumping and keeping her dry:roll:

awww look at her little cast, bless her

You have such lovely looking bunnies - they're beautiful!!!! :D

i'm glad pheobe is back home with you and her friends

dont know what to suggest for her welly boot but good luck in figuring something out
