What a day! I was expecting my family over to share a late xmas, when I noticed Phoebe wasn't right. She was right yesterday but nothing I could put my finger on. I noticed her place in the pecking order had changed and she was quiet but she was eating well. However this morning I was watching her in the garden and I noticed her front paw lifted off the ground. I rushed her to my vet, but the one I normally see was holiday. The vet i saw was very nice, but had little rabbit expertise. She told me Phoebe would have to have GA to have an xray before they could do anything. I asked her what the options were for broken legs. She mentioned splinting but this was rarely successful, the other option - amputation (and the danger of GA again!).
Well at this point, with my normal rabbit vet on holiday I decided I would go to another vet quite a few miles away who i had heard about. They had a reputation amongst rabbit owners as being very successful. I managed to get an appointment with the vet specialising in orthopedic surgery. He sedated her (not GA) to xray and fixed the bones so they would fuse together nicely. He then put a splint over the top.
The lesson I learnt today - don't always go with the first opinion of your vet. I really wanted to avoid GA if possible as I know the risks - although it is much better for rabbits now. Find a vet who knows rabbit medicine - they are precious.
Well she is not completely out of the woods yet, but i know she is good hands and she has Casey with her to help. I look forward to picking her up tommorow I hope (fingers crossed). Then I have the joy of trying to reintroduce her to the group:roll:- to be honest I don't mind, I just want my Phoebe back.
