Hi and Help!!!!!!

Watership_Down

Warren Scout
Hi everyone

Two days ago my husband phoned to say hat his colleague could no longer look after his rabbt and wondered if we knew anyone who would take it.
My husband being the soft touch decided to bring it home for us to keep.

When he brought it home I was initially quite scared as the rabbit was huge!! I always thought of rabbits as tiny little things that sit in the palm of your hand! We have never had any pets so i am having to research on the net for information.

The boy who had it last said it is nine months and not nuetered. He has no idea what breed it is. so I have decided to take him to the vet for a check up and advice.

I personally think the cage is very small and am planing on getting a playpen to give him more room. the boy also said he is toilet trained but since we have got him he seems to poop all over the cage and the times he has come out he poops on sofa , carpet etc.
The most worrying thing is he sits in the cage most of the time even though I leave the gate open most of the day to allow him free access to the living room.
I think the previous owner allowed him out for about 1 hour aday is that why he wont come out?
Also can rabbits change the way they interact with people or does being treated for 9 months in one manner affect the rest of his life?
When he is out of the cage he does come over to be groomed and makes little sniffs if he wants attention.

i have so much more to learn!! phew but already " Bigwig " is part of our family and my toddler loves him .

Hope to get to know you all xxx

hello

When did you get him ? as he may just be getting used to you and his surroundings.
Good idea to get another cage though if the one he is in now is too small :D

Cant wait for photos :D

We just got him 2 days ago. I read that they sometimes mark their territory.

Hi there & welcome, we've had floppy now nearly 8 weeks and i would say in the last 2-3 weeks he's started coming out of his shell ;) i found giving him space and talking to him, not rushing in and picking him up but just sitting there and letting him come to me has worked wonders, also had to explain to my little lad not to rush in too  he now gets on our knee's and comes running over to us when he see's us coming its great ;) just give him time ;)

Thats really nice to hear. last night he ventured from his cage a few times so I think he's beginning to feel alittle more at ease xx

 Hello and welcome, you have come to the right place for advice. so glad you saved this little bunny and he sounds like he is settling in nicely now.

You will find lots of advice on here about diet and housing. If he is to stay an indoor bunny there are also lots of set ups on here you could have a look at.

oh right. Oggie took a little while to gain the courage to come out and then every time i got up he would zoom back  but now i can seem to get him back into his hutch

You've been given good advice already, he sounds like a scared wee chap.
Just give him time to relax and come out of his shell.
Did the vet give you any advice on neuturing, vaccinations and socialisation?

Not been to the vet yet . I am going on tuesday. I was also wondering about his nails. To be honest I'm scared to look at them!! For some reason I'm scared he's going to bite me. I have no reason to feel that way as he is very mild natured but I think its the size of him.
I cant wait to find out what breed he is. when I first saw him I thought he looked like a giant (but the longer he stays with us the smaller he seems to be lol I think i'm just used to seeing very small rabbits in pet shops hoping the vet will let me know his breed xx

Perhaps you could ask the vet to show you how to clip the rabbit's claws. Good luck with your new bunny and welcome to RU.
