  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Please help, are the antibiotics making her sleepy? :(

New Kit
Earlier this morning, my rabbit Zoot escaped from her hutch and was attacked by a cat.
He bit her behind the ears, but we managed to save her before he did anything else.

We took Zoot to the vet, and she had been hopping around on my lap, though she was in shock. He checked her out, and all she needed was pain killers, and some antibiotics, she was sitting normally on the table and could move fine.
He gave her an injection of both, and since the car ride home, all she has done is sleep.
She is tucked up in my bed at the moment, and has been for the last 3 hours.

I know antibiotics often make humans sleepy, so is it the same with bunnys?
Or is it something else?

What was the name of the injections. One of mine is sometimes a little sleepy after injections, once he was very lethargic after a steroid injection.

If you are worried, I would suggest you contact your vet for advice to be on the safe side.

Sorry to hear Zoot was attacked and hope she recovers soon.

Edit - you may want to move this to the health section as more people may see it there.

It's alright, Zoot passed away half an hour ago.
She went from sleepy, to spazm.
I hope she is in a better place now :(

Oh no, I am so sorry. You must be absolutely devasted. Thinking of you.

Have sent you a PM.

Is the cause of the death the shock itself? Because 2 of my buns had a fight w/ my neighbor's cat last summer, but they are fine (there is no injury)

Or could the ABX be too heavy of a dose?

So sorry for your loss. Get yourself a rehome bun in your area to refill the energy in your house, many rabbits are waiting for months in a small living area inside a rescue center, waiting for a good home.

Yes, shock in itself is a killer (and not just in rabbits) it can lead to cardiac arrest & seizures.
