  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Nos can't feel back legs, but they work?

New Kit
Hi everyone,

I took my rabbit Nosferata, who is a one and a half year-old mini rex, to the vet today. For the past two weeks she had been walking strangely. Yes, I said walking. She moved her back legs independently on each other and seemed to walk on her tippy toes. I was confused but thought she might just be stiff or something. (For general background information, I do not keep my rabbit in a cage...she lives in my bedroom).
The last couple of days though, things have gotten worse. Her back legs do not seem to want to move. She has great difficulty jumping into her cage. Her back half of her body seems to fall and lay sideways. When this happens, she cannot get out of the position herself. My roommate has claimed to have seen her dragging her hind legs.
Obviously I was greatly concerned and took her to the vet. The x-ray of her spine was just fine. What baffled the vet was that she could move her hind legs, but could not feel the vet pinching them. The vet kept pinching until suddenly Nos jerked. The vet tried to pinch her again and Nos did nothing.
Nos used to weigh 5 pounds, now she weighs 4...but has been eating well enough.
Vet said to change her diet and see what happens. She also referred me to another vet.

Any ideas on what is wrong with my Nos? I am sooo sad.

This is in the wrong section of the forum so you may not get replys in here, please dont think were an ignorant bunch:lol:.

Im going to pm a forum member on here that may be able to help if she reads this. I hope your rabbits ok :(

Similar condition

Hi, my rabbit Snowflake is experiencing the same problems you described about Nos. Walking on tip toes, seemingly no feeling in hind legs but still able to just about move them, flopped over on side, unable to clean herself, difficulty getting up etc. What was the outcome for Nos? Snowflake is very weak but seems quite happy and is eating well. The vet gave me anti-biotics but they don't seem to be making a difference, just causing terrible diarrhea. It's been 4 days now. She's not getting worse but not getting better either. I have brought her indoors to nurse her. Any advice would be greatly received. Xxx
