  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

When should I neuter the boys?

Are they with females? As soon as their testicles drop they can be neutered. My two bonded males were neutered about 16 weeks old because they started fighting, they had to be separated for about another 3 weeks and then paired up again.

thanks yeah they are boys :)

My little man is 14 weeks and his plums have dropped in the last week and he's just started to spray :censored: although I dont think theyre related, more likely raging hormones! I've booked him in for 2 weeks time, so that will be exactly 16 weeks!

It can be done as soon as you see plums :) They'll start to get a bit pouchy and you'll start to see a lump under the skin. With any luck when they are about 12 weeks plus depending on the breed they will become very obvious. Most vets are happy to neuter from 4 months but might do earlier if he's dropped & he's having hormone problems.

Dudley is definately having a few hormone problems. The vet said he'd rather wait until the full 16weeks as Dudley is a little bit small, so me and poor Daisy will have to put up with naughty antics for a bit longer

I know this is probably a really silly question but how do you get your bun to show you his bits? lol, my bun isn't fond of being held, he's happy to be stroked all day but doesn't like being held, is there a way of looking without stressing him out?

If you look when bun is periscoping you can sometimes see their bits.

Now tell me about them spraying? I'm not sure what that is? Does it stop once they are neutered?

I think spraying is what they do to mark their territory. Since Lous been done he now always goes to the loo in his litter tray which is easier.

Do you have a good rabbit vet near you? I live in Lisburn and we use Glenburn vets, but I don't know if they have a place nearer Belfast.

well the easiest way is to hold like a baby but if you could get someone to put a tempting treat above his head and you lie on the floor just in front you may be able to see something if he's not too fluffy....you can also slip your hand under when stroking just make sure that you don't mistake bits for tail which I did once :oops:

spraying is when you get a big face full of pee....or your skirting boards, or your floor.....just like a dog or a cat really. It usually goes away when neutered.
