Opinions Wanted Please

Okay, taking out of the equation the fact that you may disagree with the sale of animals in pet stores, can you give me an opinion on the following scenario please

A man and his daughter (age approx 19), decent people say, they want a certain rabbit.

After asking a few questions, they have a great hutch which is currently in a heated garage. They also have 6 other rabbits, 5 bucks and 1 doe, all of which are housed individually in hutches in the garage and none are neutered. They get a bit of exercise in the garden when it's not too damp and a run in the hallway in the house. In summer they get to go out into runs and get to see each other through the wire of the runs.

Would you say it is a good idea to take on a 7th rabbit considering the above information?

I think in an ideal world they would get their rabbits neutered (the males at least) and either pair them up or take on enough rabbits to provide all their singles with a partner.

If there is no attached run, I'd say the hutch needs to be at least 6ft x 2ft or equivalent.

Do they get their vaccinations? :) I agree... its a bit cruel keeping them all alone :( Maybe you should explain about uterine cancer in females etc, they could spend their money on neutering before taking on another bunny? :)

But there again if they already have a 6ft x 2ft hutch they will surely go elsewhere for the bunny if they dont have it via you? :( :? xXx

Agreed.
I would suggest neutering and ask about vacs and also about accomodation sizes and suggest pairing up.
:)

Maybe they don't realise its better to have bunnies in pairs, perhaps a bit of education?

I will admit to having 4 seperate bunnies years ago before I knew what I now know about keeping rabbits.

If they are decent people (and it sounds like they care but just dont know much about rabbits) they would listen to your advice. Perhaps suggest putting the money towards getting a male and the female neutered and pairing them up instead of getting a new bunny. Then once a few more are paired they could get another bun to once again pair up with one of the remaining males? I'm sure they sound like the type of people to take good advice - Perhaps give them the link to this forum? :D

Why do they want a 7th rabbit?

I would say if they are not neutered and not breeding, then thats fine to keep them unneutered but why keep them unneutered so they cant be friends? Does that make sense?

I dont really understand why they would have this many rabbits and not keep them as a group. Must not be very nice for the bunns knowing there are other rabbits there but they cant get to socialise. Seems stranger the more I go on :?

So no I dont think they should get another rabbit just yet. They should work on getting the others neutered and making them into a group.

I have more than 6 rabbits and they are a group, they take a lot of time to feed/ clean hutches etc. I could only imagine this being a whole lot more time consuming if they were seperate.

i dont see why a 7th bunny would be a problem... if they have a decent hutch and will give the bunny lots of love.. sell sell sell :D:D:D

I would say they need a little further educating, not necessarily that they can't have another bunny. I would want to know WHY they had their rabbits seperate and would they be planning on breeding....especially if they are asking for a specific breed rabbit.

I called my dep over who has 8 rabbits, either bonded or in the process of to get her to put her opinions forward (in a nice way) and explain to them the benefits of neutering and pairing them up etc, but the father clapped his hands, said they were done and walked out.

They're putting a complaint in against me because apparently my attitude was that I wasn't going to let them have the rabbit.

 Thats awful!! You havent done a think wrong... its awful when people wont even listen :( Doubt their complaint will get very far xXx

Oh, not willing to listen then.
I do hate to see outside bunnies on their own. Ruby's been on her own for two weeks now, and I hate to see her sitting around looking bored. Toys don't amuse her for long when she's got no bun to play with!
What a shame people are like that.

Is the rabbit they wanted neutered? Sounds like are wanting to breed to me? What was the breed of rabbit you had, and what were theirs?

And potentially i dont think you would have the "yes I am going to give you a rabbit attitude" if you had of not known them for very long. After all the rabbits welfair is upmost improtant, not how some ignorant people feel.

Well, if they cant take advice on board about the neutering and vaccing then they dont sound suitable to have a 7th rabbit!

hmmm.......your shop surely reserves the right not to sell if it seems inappropriate?....I'd say you were being responsible as opposed to having a bad attitude.

Lol well their complaint wont get very far  You were just doing your job.

I take it back about them sounding like nice people who need to be educated...

They are thick people who need to be slapped

Seriously though it's a shame they are just going to go elsewhere :(
