Rabbit Nappies/ Just had a phone call, not good news

Hugo's There

Wise Old Thumper
I know a lot of people don't agree with them but we have found them really helpful for our special needs bunny Austin. Wearing them when he is free ranging has really increased his quality of life.

Up until now he has been wearing newborn baby nappies but he is so tiny they were a bit loose so needed additional sellotape to keep them on. We did try premature baby ones but they were just the wrong shape and wouldn't stay on.

Since seeing the documentary on special needs pets I have been in contact with the pet nappy people and they are custom making some for Austin. They have just rung to say my order should be here tomorrow. I'm so excited for Austin. Hopefully this will make life even easier for him as they should be much quicker to put on and take off.

I will add that i appreciate nappies aren't suitable for every bunny with incontinence and it is important to find the cause of the problem. Austin has had so many tests and medicines but nothing has helped him. He has now had his notes sent to a specialist so we are praying that she will have some new ideas to try :)

aw bless him i think ive seen a piccie of austin on here with his nappy on, will be good to see what his new ones are like , did you have to take measurements etc.
i know they dont look right but if it helps him why not eh :)

I just had to take a waist measurement :D

Because these ones do up on his back it means I wont have to keep turning him over like I do with the baby nappies

If it makes it less hassle for him to have them put on & taken off then it has to be worth a go. Fingers crossed it works well for the little one.

Good news for Austin, hope he likes his new nappies.
I know what you mean with them meaning he has a better quality of life, when kermit was ill and having wee accidents, i just couldne leave him out of his cage when i was out, so i can only imagine that now that austin has his nappies he can run about like a happy bunny!

Exactly, it was either nappies or buying a new carpet every couple of weeks  It was permanently wet from washing. He has so much more freedom now :)

Its fantastic they make them for animals. Im sure this will make a big difference to him.

Just had a very disappointing phone call from my vet. The specialist feels we have done everything poosible for Austin and there is nothing more we can do at this stage. I feel so bad for the little boy he must be so uncomfortable.

He is not just urine incontinent but passes lots of mucus which is what makes the most mess. If anyone has had any experience of this and has any ideas of treatment we can try please let me know.

Have you tried propalin syrup Liz? It tightens the bladder muscles. I think it's mainly used in females, but maybe it can be used in males too?

No I haven't tried it, I this case it wouldn't be helpful as the problem is more down to the large amounts of mucus he is passing with his poo. I think he is drinking loads to compensate for the liquid he is loosing which is then also making him wee more. It seems like if we can cure the mucus the urine problem will sort itself out.

Thanks for the suggestion though it may come in useful for another bunny in the future :D

There is also some evidence that oregano can help with mucus production

there is a product made for pigeons called Aqueous(?) that has oregano oil in and is supposedly safe for bunsters..might be worth trying

Will definately give that a try, thanks :D

Am I right in thinking the bunny isn't actually urine incontinent then? If so, I don't think I'd put a nappy on him, just spread old carpets/sheets out on the floor whenever he's out of his cage.

This is what he was like before using nappies

Now his legs are fine as the nappy prevents the urine going on his legs and with regular bathing and sudocream the rest of his skin is much less sore too.

He is weeing on himself as well as the mucus, but I was lead to believe the 2 things are related and if we can sort out the mucus problem hopefully the urine incontinence will clear up too. Unfortunately tests have all come back normal and no meds have worked so we are back to square one.

Obviously we tried sheets and towels everywhere but it really wasn't working we couldn't even walk round our own house for the mess and he was covered. Sometimes the mucus is jelly like other times it comes out of him jet propelled like water :D

He only wears nappies when he is out of his cage and it has given him a new lease of life. Now his favorite past time is running up and down the stairs which he was never able to do before :D

I'd definitely talk to your vet again. For my bun, the urine incontinence came first and the mucous second...so they are very probably linked, but I really doubt that mucous would actually cause urine incontinence

Well my vet refered him to Francis Hardcourt Brown and she said we had done everything right and covered all angles so there was nothing else she could do for him :?
