  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Need Advice On Spaying

Hi there everyone, we're new to the site and are urgently in need of some advise so would be brilliant to hear from anyone.

We have 2 little Lop girls, one 9 month and the other about 10 weeks which we just recently got as a friend for the older one (Lucy). We're keeping them in separate rooms in the house at the moment as Lucy isn't all too happy to see the young newcomer (Penny) so we have been told that we need to get Lucy spayed asap and that will maybe calm her a little (for a start) We have what we think is quite a good vet that we use here in Sheffield but we are VERY cautious about going forward with the procedure as we have been told that there is a considerable risk involved with the anesthetic side of things. I guess what we are getting at is, can anyone help in directing or advising us on a rabbit experienced or specialist surgery we could use nearby to us (Sheffield)

Please any help or advise on these points would be great,

Thanks.

If you use a rabbit-savvy vet there is no more risk anaesthetising a healthy rabbit than there is anaesthetising a healthy adult cat :) And IMO the small risks are far outweighed by the benefits.

Totally agree. You could try pm,ing HolidayHutches or bunnymadhouse they live in Barnsley and would recommend you a rabbit savvy vet:D

When I got my two does they weren't spayed but their behaviour was very different from my other neutered pair. They were humping each other *constantly*, they peed while they moved around their hutch, one of them was verging on aggressive, the works.

Both now spayed and they are a delight, no humping, they are clean and use their litter trays and they seem so much happier together.

I was worried about anaesthetic too, but compared to the risks of uterine cancer I think it is worth it even without adding in the behavioural changes. Hope someone can recommend a good vet to you :)

Hya all!

Thanks ever so much for the advise, it's made us feel a lot more confident about the whole thing and we're going to get onto it straight away.

Thanks again.
